isn't it possible to skin a patch model????
do i have to turn it to a mesh object for skining? (skinning as part of rigging not texturing)

does anyone use the envelopes and the cross sections in the skin modifier. they totaly don't work for me. do you usually skin handy (paint the vertics by yourself)?
do you ever use the copy and paste envelopes function? it also doesn't work for me.

I can't answer all your questions, they don't remind me of anything I've experienced, but I thought I'd just mention that you can at the very least easily turn the patch model into polys by smacking a Turn To Poly modifier on it right before the Skin one.

That way, if Skin does indeed have a problem with patches, you can turn the model into Polys dynamically, so to speak, so you can still work with the patches underneath if that's your thing.

It is very much possible to skin a patch model. I use patches often on skinned models and it makes vertex assignment quick and easy. Make sure you have rigid patch handles on though.
