This has happened twice already so I have narrowed it down to being MAX's fault. After happily installing it, I get a message saying that Windows XP has been modified and a system component is no longer working. Its something similar to that as I am running a spanish OS and you never know the exact translation... It tells me to insert my Windows XP Pro CD, I do so, but it says wrong CD! Has this problem happened to anyone else?

EDIT: Also I forgot to add that after all this, my old MAX 4 begins loading and says that some software license is missing! What the......?

Also, is anybody getting any problems having both R4 (4.2) and R5 on the same system?

You are probably better off contacting Discreet and getting their help and support on with this issue. I doubt that anyone here is qualified enough to give you the answer that you seek, plus if this really is a problem with the Max install (though this is the first instance I have ever seen of someone having a problem like this) then they should be notified so that they can fix it.

As Fozzie said, either call discreet or your reseller, or bring it to the attention of Darv Atkeson on the discreet webboard.

I can certify that max 4.2 and 5 can co-exist and run together with no problems. Any version of max installed on different directories will work.
I used to have 3.1, 4.2 and 5, VIZ, Plasma and Gmax at one time.
You can also run multiple instances of the same installation. Only thing is the sharing of the 3dsmax.ini file, which is overwritten by the last instance you close. Usually not a problem at all.

 I feel really bad about having to admit this in public... but after recently formatting my computer I didn't install my Antivirus.... I knew I was missing something! Apparently, the virus was messing around with registries and it didn't let either product function. All is under control now. Thanks for your advice anyway!
