UPDATE:

"Peter Liguori, president, entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Co., told reporters he's leaving the door open to resurrecting the canceled SF animated series Futurama. Liguori, speaking in a news conference at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif., referred to the network's decision last year to bring back Family Guy after the show became a hit on DVD.

"There's no doubt that the Family Guy model worked outstandingly," Liguori said. "It's great to be a network exec and have a decision made for you by the audience."

Liguori added: "In terms of Futurama, there haven't really been any active negotiations at this point. But I'd be an ostrich to just stick my head in the dirt and not realize what's going on with Futurama as well." "

"Talks have begun at 20th Century Fox TV to revive the animated skeinskein (http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=slanguage_result&slang=skein&page=Slanguage&display=skein), which takes place in the next millennium, much in the same way "Family Guy""Family Guy" (http://www.variety.com/studiosystems/index.asp?layout=studiosystems&ss_view=s_s_project&mode=allcredits&project_id=8154) found new life after cancellation.
The studio is in early discussions to put "Futurama" back in production and create a limited number of episodes of the Emmy Award-winning skein -- although it's too soon to tell where those segs might end up. A reprep (http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=slanguage_result&slang=rep&page=Slanguage&display=rep) for 20th Century Fox TV declined comment."

why did they cancel in in the first place?

Holy crap.. I've read this "news" so many times now that find it very hard to trust.

But I really, really, really hope it's true this time!!

Futurama is one of the best animated series to date, had it been on any other network than Fox, it might've flourished still. Groening was forced to give up creative control, he refused so Fox kept airing it at odd times and with long periods of time between new episodes to lessen interest in the show, presumably in order to put leverage on Groening or ultimately to justify a canellation of the show entierly. If Futurama is picked up, it wont just mean more episodes of this terriffic series, but it means that Fox have lost a significant prestige battle, and that Groenings integrity is kept intact for all future, pretty much.

It would truly be a big day.

Oh man...I can't wait for this. I still watch Futurama every night on Adult Swim. Seen them each like a dozen times but still cracks me up. Love it waaaaaaay more then the Simpsons. Fry rocks :D

why did they cancel in in the first place?

because Matt Groening wanted to stop making the Simpsons and work on Futurama. but FOX can't let the Simpson's go and made Matt's decision easy for him. they setup Futurama to die...

-placing against 60 Minutes [highest watched show year after year (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/60_Minutes#Ratings_history)]
-Sunday's at 7:00 [which means the east coast NEVER gets to see it because football games would ALWAYS run long and the would let the game run over Futurama]
-no advertising

you can also see Matt Groening's love for FOX executives in a lot of episodes during this time [Krusty's monkey throwing C4 explosives into the room where FOX executives where standing when Side Show Bob tried to kill Krusty]

I remember one Sunday evening, Fox made a BFD about airing Star Wars TPM. It was on at 5pm, which meant it'd be over at 7pm. Instead of showing Futurama after Star Wars on its regular time, they pre-empted it and aired an episode of King of the Hill.

What really got me about Futurama was that it wasn't just gag-a-minute, it actually had some really genuinely touching moments. I defy anyone to watch the ending of the Jurassic Bark episode and not feel like crying.

Everyone I know (including me) shed a few tears over the ending of that episode. I also loved Futuramas style of humour - it's really off-the-wall and not gag-based. It's actually witty and I find the characters really engaging.

Bonedaddy and Leigh hit it right on the head. This show has more heart than just about any animated series around. You feel for the characters. the series ended just as it was getting even more amazing, story and character-wise. I hope they pick it up from where they left off if it does come back.

"Jurassic Bark" is one of the true classics matched only by "Luck of the fryish" and "The Sting", but I'm still having trouble watching the very last episode of the series "The devils hands are idle playthings", never thougth I could be so affected by an animated series

Now, to turn on my more serious and sensetive side:
Futurama's grand status on my shelf, relies in the fact that it transcends the animted genres in many ways, as it witholds the audience to appreciate both the simple visual animated humour along with more brainy and sensetive themes, it is a true satire of our daily lives, evoking our idealistic world, with pure honesty, no matter how wierd stupid or cynical our thoughts are in the world of futuama all is free to streak or as jhonny cash said "lies have to becovered up, but the truth can run around naked' and it shall and it will in futurama.

Most of all as many of you might have already mentioned, even the characters conjure a sense of conformity with the audience, i myself am for sure not the only one that ever felt sorry, happy or shared a conscience with for instance Fry's mental dilemma's, sure he is an idiot but he is complex as any other living character roaming our world.

I recently seen the episode treating fry's disastres lucky streak, and at the end (warNING SPOILER AHEAD!!) when he he discovered the writing on his nephew's tomb whom he tought was his brother, it actually moved me, i never felt said for a ficticious character before not even shakespeares king lear did this to me. Maybe its because i was watching it with my younger brother who at times we do not get along that well, whatever may be the reason that scene showed far more emotion than any other crappy soap opera, or god help us reality sh88 shows that i'm so sick off.

is Luck of the Fryish the one about the 7 leaf clover and his older brother? that one had me going at the end.

**spoiler**

they set it up to make Fry's older brother look like he took all of Fry's ideas and luck, but it turns out it was Fry's nephew [named after his missing uncle] who made Fry's dreams come true.

god, futurama was so well written!

Cool!! i sooo hope this news turn out to be true... i canīt say i like it more than the simpsons (they have a piece of my heart  ) but nevertheless i loved the show since the first episode... as a lot of you have said, its really the sensitive side of it that really suprised me (it reminds me of "scrubs" for the same reason); Like that "luck of the fryish" episode, or the one where leela discovers her true origins, and the episode ends up with a series of secuences in which we see how her fathers care for her... very nice!

Yes that's the one.

Speaking of the actors...

Billy West is an extremely talented voice actor (Fry, Farnsworth, Zapp Brannigan, Zoidberg among others), without him there simply wouldn't be a Futurama as we know it. My guess is that he'd jump at the opportunity to work with Futurama again, it's a life-achivement IMO. I'm surprised he's not talked about more, with all animated films being made these days.

Here's hoping this is for real this time. Last rumor I heard involved a movie but I'd prefer a new season or three. Futurama was one of the few series that seemed to know who it was early on and just got better and better. The end of "The Devil's hands are idle playthings" still gets me. You could just tell that everyone involved with the show really loved it.

I wish this is true, love Futurama and in my book "Luck of the fryish" is the best episode they had done. I can not finish that episode without getting choked up.

For what it is worth, thank Cartoon Network for all these comebacks, without Adult Swim there wouldn't be any new Family Guy episodes and the thought of Futurama coming back as well.

I keep hearing about Fox bringing Futurama back - just do it already dammit! Futurama has to be the cleverest animated show ever - the writers did one helluva job with the witty dialogue and the interweaving storylines (you gotta watch the show at least twice through to truly appreciate the amount of work that was done in this respect). The voice acting is simply unequalled - Billy West, John DiMaggio, Katey Sagal (to name a few) really bring the characters to life like no other show I've seen/heard.

I reckon the single episode that exemplifies Futurama has to be Roswell That Ends Well. That ending was what got me. Given a thousand years, I would've never thought of that (joke intended). Very clever stuff. Combine that with awesome action and some truly laugh-out-loud moments, and you have an episode which I watch almost religiously. :D

Repeating the theme yes but when something is so true it has to be repeated. That episode really choked me up so well written. another episode that really impressed me was when Bender became a God and then met God. And then the God character said "when you do things right nobody will be sure you did anything at all" that really made me think and also really re-evaluate....well not my beliefs but certainly Futurama as a program, its a little more than just simple entertainment and I miss it greatly (Zoidberg in particular)

I personally wouldn't think it was 100% a bad thing if we never saw any new episodes. Why?

Often good comedy, particularly in America (20+ per series compared with 6 in the UK), goes on running for aeons when the producers hit on an idea that works. The Simpsons and Futurama are two of the best comedy shows ever made, in my opinion. Yet, I think that it took the Simpsons two series or so before it started being really funny. They made about four or five series after that that were all classics. Then, they carried on making them at a rate of 24 a year (or whatever it is) and they start to run out of ideas and the quality of the episodes lessens. When they fiinally axe a show it's because all the good ideas have been exhausted and no one is interested in watching them anymore because they aren't what they used to be.

Currently we have four series of Futurama and every single series is spectacular! If they commission another few more series there's no guarentee they'd be up to our expectations. Learn from the fine example of John Cleese who stopped Fawlty Towers after two series so they could leave on a high.

I may be completely wrong but I'd hate for them to make a load more Futurama only to compromise the quality of them.

arvid

Futurama is different, there's still so many things left to be told of the story, I don't just want Futurama back for some more gags, I want to know how it really ends, or begins depending on how you look at it.

DrQuincy
01-19-2006, 11:49 AM
I agree with you - there is still a lot of potential. It would be good it Futurama doesn't carry on to the point where the standard of the episodes dropped. It's happened with so many shows over the years.

Haven't read the whole thread, but it would be brilliant to see this show resurrected. To quote Dr. Zoidberg, 'Whoop-whoop-whoop-whoop-whoop!' :)

I'm not sure whether this has already been suggested but, 'Good news, everyone...' would have been a far better thread title. ;)

.....spoilers

Anyone remember the episode "the sting?" where fry dies from a giant bee sting and leela starts hallucinating and seeing him as a ghost. And he keep saying "you have to wake up, please wake up"....and it turns out that shes the one who got stung and hes been talking to her while she was in a coma in the hospital. Man oh man, that was an incredibly written episode. Very very moving. If you haven't seem it do it now!!

....end spoilers

Futurama has so much heart and soul. With far fewer characters than simpsons, you get to spend more time with them and know them better. Simpsons needs to be cancelled NOW. Its unbearable to watch, its like seeing your favourite pet get badly injured and you know you should have him put down, but you cant, so you just watch this pathetic creature struggling to survive and impress you.
