..or, I should say, the vacuum cleaner of space :)

This is a robot designs for a game I'm working on called 'Mr Robot (http://www.moonpod.com/mrrobot)'
Older robot design threads: 1 (http://showthread.php?t=188505) 2 (http://showthread.php?t=216069) 3 (http://showthread.php?t=288291)

Meet Dyson - head of the cleaning crew on board the space ship 'Eidolon'. Dyson has what you would call a 'walk on part' but he was a lot of fun to come up with. My work colleague's daughter drew me a little picture of a robot with long 'anglepoise' style bendy arms for cleaning up the space ship. I really liked the concept of a futuristic vacuum cleaner robot http://www.moonpod.com/board/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif I also love the design ethos behind the products made by the Dyson company (http://www.dyson.com/homepage.asp). So I came at this design wondering what the people at Dyson would be making in the future http://www.moonpod.com/board/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif.

Nice one Nick! The colors and silhouette read instantly, which is great. The retro look and almost...I dunno Lego kind of look you've got going is lending this game its own atmosphere in a hurry, good job!

very nice, original and fresh.
i recognised the dyson look straight away which is good.
nice work:)
i think your black lines are a bit too thick, and also i'd play with not having black lines but rather dark orange ones on the orange bits and dark grey ones on the silver bits if you get what i mean.

Nice one Nick!
Hey thanks! Not heard from you in a while Adam - what happened to the side on 2D action game? I was really looking forward to that!

have you got a reflection map in there or is it in the map?
No that's just burned in right now. Oddly enough, our 3D engine has a limitation to do with reflection maps, it has to use pixel and vertex shaders to do anything more than basic blending. I should probably find some cube map example shaders and get them working, but it's not the easiest thing for me (as an artist) to get my head round - I miss the old and easy D3D fixed function spheremaps :)

That's a good point thanks. I usually like that with concept art also - something I've always noticed with anime is that the lines are 50% coloured with their surround and not just black.

haha i wasn't sure you remembered that or not! i actually got a chance to make a lot of progress on it over xmas break, i will have some new stuff to show very soon :) i ended up with a few art contracts on top of my day job so things had slowed down quite a bit for a while there, but I'm very happy with where it's at now. I'll fill you in on the action once I have a new demo ready!

As for coloring the dividing lines, I really like this guy's method:http://www.derekyu.com/extras/pixel01.html

The tut is designed for sprite and pixel art, but stage 5 or 6 there covers SelOut (selective outlining) in a very helpful way I think!

It's amazing I remember anything these days! I actually forgot the name of someone I sat next to at work for 3 years when I bumped into him the other day!
I don't think anyone's attempted anything like your idea for a long time, which is why it stuck in my head. Still, it's good to see you aren't short of work - not everyine can say that in this business!

Cool, thanks! I'd love to see how it's going :)

That's a fantastic pixel art tutorial. I know Derek from over at (the wonderful) Tigsource (http://www.tigsource.com)
