View Full Version : Fisheye Lens Trick
Peoples 11-27-2002, 04:53 PM I dunno if this is an old idea - just figured a way to make a bit stranger camera-views in cinema. This is straight out of cinema xl7 - no postwork..

I like the wall texture, where did you take it? :p

lemme guess ...
you rendered that with the camera facing a raytraced 100% reflective sphere
:curious:

Either way, it's a beautiful scene.
I'm wondering what the flare is on the left side, though

Could you share a sample file with us? or tell us how you did it?

It's just simple physics - I made a material with only the transparency channel activated 100% and index of refraction 6 (I don't know what is the upper limit with IOR - cause the view didn't change a bit even if I changed it to 20..). Then I made a real ´lens´with a sphere and positioned it just in front of the camera. The camera settings where on fisheye as well. The flare is a bummer - after countless radiosity settings I ended up with 1000 stoch samples and 15min 25 max. Seems like I still need to up the min/max samples.......Btw - you can get really cool pics with experimenting different shapes as the lens. I'm trying to figure out the physics of a lens that would make a pic like the teapot pic in the final work gallery someone had rendered with Vray's spherical camera:

what happened to the file? a file of the whole scene would be even better:buttrock:

geeze you guys, he explained how to do it so just do it, not rocket science here read his instructins and make one.

just a few days ago i decided to make a fisheye lens too, not just wide angle but with heavy distortion. made two ant surfaces and applied them a glass material with a refraction of about 3. then made them a children object of the normal angle camera and also made a black ring around the lenses so it has the kind of skate video effect to it.

@jugalo180: I have destroyed the scene and the pic in that was in this thread - sorry.. But as Kaiskai said - it's really not that difficult to set up a lens that has some distortion in it, just try it!
@mihkeltt: Hey that sounds cool - could You show some result renders?

Pretty neat! Out of curiousity, do you have fresnel checked in the transparency settings? I'm thinking this could be responsible for the flare, since fresnel can make internal reflections.

Like chris_b said, one really efficient way of setting up a Fisheye lens effect is to place a camera in front (or on top) of a 100% reflective sphere (as if you were doing a HDRimage).
I´ve tried this some time ago in Bryce, because i wanted to make a hemisphere image of the enviroment setup in Bryce, to project it later in an AllSky projection system in the planetarium where i work, and it turned out really good!
umm refraction should not be able to go above 2 basicly if its above 2 it means that the light ray has completly bent in half which is pretty much impossible. Actually they are not sure if its totally impossible but right now at least in the physical none Cg would it is I am pretty darn sure.
