That's a great mesh already, his a55 looks a bit rectangular but it could be the angle. The head reminds me of hellboy. Have fun with the rest and happy new year!

Solid work so far guillom...I dig the topology and I think 10,000 triangles is about right for this guy (I presume he is approached as a playable character?) and I like ya method of how ya blocking out the hands too...interesting and gives a good preivew to the proportions...If ya don't mind me asking, but what polygon count is he so far?....keep up the progress man...

agreed. just like blocking out a life-drawing. off to a great start. can't wait to see how this guy turns out. gotta say, I'd like to see his shoulder blades poking through the mesh a little.

Cheers,

Thx for your comments and your advices

johnwoo, Psyk0

yes he will be a playable character,4900 tris so far but i will optimised him after Zbrush

This mesh is just the preparation for ZB, so i tried all quads

Thx for the advice, i will correct his ass ( too rectangular that's true )

Thx all for your support...

This is looking sweet guillom, your mesh work looks solid so far, although the topology in the forearm looks slightly off. I think the shape and form is good but you might want to work in a twist in the geometry, when the arm rests in that position the forearm tends to twist. I can post an image to help illustrate what i mean better if im not explaining very well :) Other than that minor quibble its looking good.

Nice to see U not dead .. undead :P Mesh looks ok but the masterpiece U show always on texture, so I'm waiting for them. Hoping U will show us some more skills U gain last times. Maybe more realistic the toon this time, but the choice is like always Yours.

Cheers dude.

Thx guys :)

CG_Gordon :

The forearm is not very good i know but with a normal on top off will be allright , i can always add some cuts after if it's not acceptable for animation.

Thx for the ref but i already have some books of anatomy :D

Psionic Design, Por@szek :p :

yeah i'm gonna try to texture it more realistically this time unless i have a toon design for this character, could work well i think

eheh i'm doing the same on every PC  :)

the modeling is not finish but i will this week end ... and maybe start Zbrushing, hopefully !

Looking really good guillom!!...I dig the footwear now that it's modelled, he could do with some straps to hold on the shin guards too, unless ya plan on them being NM's instead?...also the refined straps on the torso work very well too...any chance of a wire too?...Oh btw...I like the topology, and personally I would'nt be too brutal with the optimising, as I like how the silhouette looks and also looks like it would deform well too...but if ya must...ya must :)...keep up the progress man...

guillom
01-15-2006, 03:37 PM
Thank you very much Johnwoo for your advices

No i won't be too brutal with optimising, it's just some areas that don't need such a density to work...:) as you can see on the wire.

Yeap for the straps i think i will put that in the normal, small details are always hard to project for normal map.

here is the progress ...

Do ya plan on any hair for him?

I think ya have...but just would like to ask if ya modelled the inside of the mouth aswell?...

Solid work!...

guillom
01-15-2006, 04:21 PM
hehe :) i didn't modelled yet the inside of the mouth, but i will...

I don't think to put any hair on him ( i'm dealing with hair and alpha every day at work so this time this character 'll be bald :D i'm lazy i know :) )

hey Guilliaumalliualleiae :bounce: :) I like it (I mean the character ;D) a lot! really really like the shape of the guy and the idea. he doesn't look to clever, which gives sort of feeling of that wariors (go - and kill!). personally I'd put there some hard edges to give better definition of the shape or tho I believe you are going to do so, aren't you? :)
if you're going to show half of your skills with character texturing you are showing at work, it's going to be front-page stuff than ;)
good luck with it!

01-17-2006, 09:08 PM
Hey caro ! Good to see you here

yes i will probably add some better definition on some areas of the shape, maybe i gonna try something more stylised, why not, maybe he is already too much :) we 'll see...

Thx for the " skills " things, very appreciated

No prob Psyk0 i could give some tips during the process... btw thx ;)

Early zbrushing ...

still a lot to do !!! hope my PC will handle this since i have my new graphic card. My current one is crap !

i'm still working more or less on the basic shapes .

more to come ...

This is looking really good. Nice definition so far on the high-poly, and real nice, mesh flow on the low-poly. My only concern, and this might be alleviated with textures, is that at the moment his face looks less like that of a battle-hardened gladiator, and more like a big friendly giant. Should be cool to see this take shape.

Whoa!! Yes. He is definitely starting to get beefy now. If this was taken to in-game would you be able to import it directly into an engine, normal map and all? Or would it have to be done some other way? Just curious, me and some students in class were not sure. Good Job, your model is killer!

guillom

Mind Traveler : uhmmmmm i didn't get this one ! can you explain, sorry but i'm not english :)

Basically i model a low poly, do the uvs, export with uvs in Zbrush and then start to sculpt

After that i import the hi rez mesh and the low rez from Zbrush to MAX.

I extract the normal by using the low cage on top of the High one.

For the tip : i import in Max, after, the mid rez of the character in Max to do the occlusion

you can then use this occ map to start texturing ( very usefull )

I can explain that after this character is done by a small tutorial ( modeling a nose for example )...

jfalconer : exactly ! the more i observe this character the more i find this weapon not very

appropriate... so i will think of something else

Thx for spoting on this detail

retardedmonkey and nibbuls : Thx very much for your support

These two parts are finished so tomorrow the hands and maybe the foot...

hey!!

looking good so far. no crits from me. i just wondered if you could point me in the right direction to find out more about this "occlusion" map that you are talking about?
is it the same as baking shadows from a GI setup?
also, when smoothing the model in Zbrush, how do you stop the hi-poly open edges moving away from the low-poly edges?

cheers!!

rob-beddall
01-19-2006, 02:11 PM
hey!!

i've just noticed that the Zmapper plug-in for Zbrush has something called "cavity shading". i'm guessing that this is pretty much what an ambient occlusion does?
just thought you might want to check it out if you didn't already know. it would save you having to export the mid-res to max at least.

cheers!!

PhilOsirus

Very nice model, good sense of weight. The only thing I don't really like is how angular the lips are, it would be difficult to give him facial expressions. If you want to give him a certain facial expression you could do it by modifying the expressions rather than directly in the modeling. Other than that I can't wai to see him textured!:)

01-19-2006, 07:28 PM
Rob_rendall :

thx , Just press the crease button ( below the divide button ) before smoothing your model...

Btw i prefer using real occlusion in max 8, because the cavity map doesn't care about how close the geometry is to another piece of geometry.

You have to way to do occ by this technique :

- you can export a midrez model without uvs so that you have to combine each pieces, put in maya to do automatique uvs ( too slow in max ), reimport in max, assign to max mentalray renderer, bake occlusion with render to texture, after it's pretty much like extracting a normal map but for diffuse so that you bake the occlusion on your lowpoly uvs.

- or just import your mide rez model ( with the uvs you have done before zbrush ) and bake occlusion like above , that's why i do my uv before zbrushing... :)

Btw i didn't use yet zmapper, i have to try this...

Phil :

Thx but i'm not sure the design is a problem unless you have done bad edgeloops

if you have a good topology you can animate everything

thx for ya support ! :)

Veteehrri, Cg_Gordon :

Thanks a lot guys, i'll do my best.

PsyK0 :

Je savais pas que t'étais francophone ! merci

hmm, ok, understood, and the low mesh? will You do it later?

rob-beddall
01-20-2006, 08:57 AM
hey!!

aaaah now i see. i couldn't understand why the mid rez would need uv's but now i think i get it.
let me see if this is right....
you need uv's on the mid rez so that you can bake the occlusion to it.
then you just "render to texture" the texture from the mid-rez down to the low rez.
is that right? seems simple enough.
though i don't understand why you don't just use the hi-poly to do the occlusion map?
is it just because it takes too long?
keep up the good work. looking forward to seeing how this one turns out :)

cheers!!

guillom
01-20-2006, 09:52 AM
ROB_BEDDALL : i don't use the high rez version because max can't handle such a big mesh

( and btw you don't need so much definition in your occlusion map )

bugo : well hummmm :hmm:  look at the top of the thread maybe ;)

spm : i don't want to push too far the design to fall in a very cartoony character .

i will put that exageration in the sword ( ex : god of war etc....)

Eyh Giro, you here ! thx buddy , you have to put some stuff here ;) aswell...

THX ALL.

Vectorius
01-20-2006, 01:10 PM
Wow!! very good job Guillom!! i like the zbrush version. can't wait to see it with textures!!
so, i read your threads and i try to understand(i'm not english like you but my english is very poor than yours;) ) that you use the high poly mesh to do the normal map... all right...but i don't undestand how? you sculpt him in zbrush then you export it as a texture( it is the method which I see more since some time) ? or you use the high(or mid) poly as a "hull" ?

i'm going to work on a low poly character and so i want to work with normal map, so I try to learn as much as possible about any normal mapping solution, indeed it will be the first time to me...

and, if you've time, can you explain me what is "occlusion" and so how to make that...
thx man and keep goin'on!

Wazzzaaa!!!......Guillaume

Really good start on your Gladiator man...
my only critics it's about his chin, I see a bit exaggerated wrinkle and bump on it wish I think is doesn't fit right , maybe smooth it a bit or made a hole like Kirk Douglas style…?

What do U think ma poule?

Chris

guillom
01-22-2006, 05:56 PM
hey Chris ! Yeah i know this detail but i prefer putting more exageration in the wrinkles because you always lose a lot of definition in your normal map when you extract it ! :p

Bartabac : Thk you buddy, a lot of people are complaining about the mouth but some others like it, so i don't know

I'm currently between 7000 and 8000 tris and i don't think it's gonna be more ( but sure less after optimisation ) so don't worry

Oh yeah ! Dogfighter i'll be glad you have some test on rigging this fella because i'm a crap at rigging :p

thx man

hey thank you Gary !

Oh and of course your model and zbrush looks fabulous. Only thing, It looked as if the tricep muscle right below his bicep seems a little "lacking" in bulk and a little to stretched around the arm. My only crits are:
What is going on in his crotch area? On one of the side views, it's got sort of a weird shape.. what's under there shouldn't be that shape unless he's got a SEVERE battle wound.
I think the corners of his mouth should be turned down a little bit more. I like how he's sort of smirking, but I think it's a bit.. happy looking.

I'm hoping U will add some more details to this metal part on the arm (forgot the name for it). I think it would looks cool with some ornament like ... maybe lion head, or just some nails.

Great update! This is looking better and better. It might be nice to pop out the edge of the armour...make it slightly more interesting by giving it some rivits or perhaps a defined bump along the edge. You could add those into the normal map.

Hey looks really cool, but i think he looks much to clean.
Add some dirty parts on the skin, or some scratches on the leather, things like that.

Anyway, great work.

looking tight guillom. you've got such a light touch with this stuff. seems effortless. keeep it coming man. if i had to crit anything, i'd say that the shoulder plate seems to uniformly rough. there should be bits where the surface is more scratched and shiny, and other bits where dust, rust and sweat are working their entropic magic. just a suggestion though.

cheers,

Glad I kept up with this post it ended up very nice. Two thumbs up man :).

Only a few things..of course opinion that could change. I would definetly add scars on his body. From the looks of him he is about middle age, been a gladiator for a little while...or at least for as long as he has survived. I would assume he would have battle scars possibly on his arms, legs, back, ya know somewhere.

Other thing is that most of his cloth seems a bit to clean. You ahve the armor nice and dirty but the cloth in my opinion would be the very first thing to get dirt on it, seeing how its more abbrasive than metal, sokes stuf in easier.

I love it though. I am definetly looking forward to seeing the weapon you give him. Im always a fan of the multi chained mace. Dont know the true name.

Hello Guillom, I've been watching the Gladiator progressing and has turned out amazing!! Really love the skin-work!
My crits focus on dirtying him up and maybe add some more normal definition on the arm-bracelets...
Waiting for the rest of his stuff

Great stuff, Guillom. Really nice. :applause:

Really dig the choice of colours and that fact he's not just another bruised and battered gladiator (too many of those already ;) )

I'm guessing you will add bump/spec at some stage... Here's hoping.

Hi G.......m :)

uh, what can I say... brilliant! honestly, I simply love it! It looks very clean, the texture seems perfect to me, it's not too shiny like nearly every character for nex gen, it's got great style... the only think I'm not sure about is the thexture on the metal thing on his arm (I like the shape of it tho!). Especially the way how the stipes are conected to it.

6 stars stuff!

Hey, great work! The anatomy and cloth modeling are the best imo. I would agree that the armor parts need more details. Are you using a spec map? It could help make the metal really pop.
Ur frogman was great btw ;)

Salut .G

Bon allez fais toi plaisir !! Good job my friend.

I dont really like the texture on the weapon.
its too simple and the blade looks a bit weird some inconsistent scratches and also dirt in places i wouldnt expect them.
Perhaps use a gradient layer for some lighting effects as well?
