View Full Version : What makes dirt look real?
Eclyps19 01-05-2006, 12:07 AM How can I make somewhat believable dirt with procedurals. I can't seem to get anything looking right. I just want mostly flat land, kinda like where you'd find a giraffe or an elephant. I'll have patches of grass and trees but the dirt never looks good. Any suggestions?

Image maps are always going to look better than procedurals.. But you could try using one procedural (esp. Dented) to be an alpha of another.

How close up must the dirt be? I suggest a few additive proceedural colours of brown-blackish color, and use the Bump to create some depth.

Is dirt due to fingerprints, oxide, scratches, powder, fluffs, grease? much depends on what type of dirt you are trying to achieve and how so near is your camera shot.

this dirt/mud is all procedural...not incredible, but shows that something decent is possible...using a few layers you can get decent cracks, rocks, etc...

you never cease to amaze me howard. That's pretty much what I was goin for just with a lighter color. How did you get the rocks?

If you're looking for a savanna type look, there is a also a tutorial out there somewhere that uses hypervoxels to create some shrubbery which looks pretty cool.

Nice dirt, Howard!
Also interested in how you did the rocks?
How many layers is that?
(On a workflow question, do you prefer fprime or Viper for previews as you build the texture?)
Thanks,

cheers guys! :D
the dirt is made up from a few bump maps and color layers and the rocks are actually VEIN textures!.. Each layer is displaced using a Texture Displacement layer to break up the normal look of the procedurals....
TD is a very useful method to getting more random and customized procedurals! :p
ill have to look when i get home this weekend, but i think that surface is at least 10 layers in color and bump....I like to use Fprime as it gives a much better representation of what the final will look like...

Well thats clear as dirt. Just kidding. I always wanted to know what the texture displacement layer was good for. I've never used it before sounds interesting. :)

here ya go guys....feelin in that holiday spirit still, so enjoy :D
as with most things, one scale works, others wont, so you will have to play with the textures to get them to look right for your objects most likely...but at least you can see what I did and hopefully learn from it. :D

it's actually just a test scene i'm doing. It's a cartoony giraffe, cell shaded, with a few trees, and basic skytracer. i'm trying to figure out how to get good patches of grass.

when you do a dirty map is important to apply also like diffusion be cause dirty lower diffusion on surface.
i did a good work with grit3 baked and modified with photoshop. that help me to add dirty layer more stronger than original grit3 pass
grit3 is a free plugin you can find it on flay.com
