View Full Version : animation with mental ray
Jacobo 02-28-2002, 09:47 PM Has anyone managed to render an animation seq with mental ray for maya? When you go ahead and try to batch render a seq from the mental ray menu it opens up and closes some command line windows in a flash and there's no activity afterwards... I don't get any error messages either.... What's the big idea??

Don't feel too bad - I'm not even getting it to render a single frame of some of my scenes now. It is poorly optimized for network rendering with machines dropping out left, right and center from performing any rendering until they're all sitting their waiting for the render to finish...
I can't even render an advanced scene with GI and raytraced shadows.
No one seems to have any answers so far unfortunately - though if you find any miracle cures I'd love to hear them.
At this stage I've run out of most mainstream options so I'm going out and buying a ouija board and asking it how to render with mental ray for maya.
Will let you know if the spirit of an egyptian slave-trader lets me know the secret.
good luck,
skyPhyr.

i already contacted all the egyptian spirits , they dont have a clue.
is it just me or did everybody start to have these render problems lately?.
or maybe it was always there but nobody was talking about it.
now i know better why the studios use "renderman" for rendering

i've managed to render a sequence through MR.
once to submit it through the batch renderer in MR, a small black prompt windows appear. you should be able to see it on your task bar. its usually labeled "maya.exe"
i was also confused at first because i didnt see anything occur. but i noticed an extra maya dialog window on the task bar and realized that it was rendering.
they only problems i've experience with animation rendering is that it tends to quit out every 20 - 40 frames and i would have to resubmit the batch again. very annoying.

It's just so weird that I don't get anything... I get a message from the command line saying that the rendered images will be written to their designated location and that's it... I don't get that extra window as well... And I checked the task manager, no cpu activity and no rendered images whatsoever... what do you reckon is going on with this thing? :)

did u set all your settings in MR render globals correctly?? and also, are u using .Tifs texture mapping?? if so, it doesnt support it. check all your mapping files. and i recommend u read the unsupported features (and there are a few) section. this might answer some of your problems.

actually, yes... I used MR's globals exclusively and set the image output format to TGA (does it only support tiff??)... I wonder if it is the network settings though but we went through those as well... Everything seems tip top... Can't figure it out.... :( Could you get into this in a bitmore detail like what I should do and shouldn't?
