Hi,

where is the Bezier curve tool in Maya 4.5 OSX?

I am new to Maya so I dont know if it exist.

If not, what tool to use with the similar control as bezier?

Or should I go back to Softimage;)

there's no bezier curves in maya, however a plugin exists for it. it's called ezcurves. try finding it on www.highend3d.com

one tip: use the cv curve tool. you can fast used to it.

Maya has certain tools called ep and cp curve tool. They are kind of like bezier tools, but not exactly. They still work good enough.

Maya only uses B-splines. The ezcurve plugin just emulates Beziers. The curve it makes is still a B-spline. You can create Bezier surfaces in maya though.

what is the different between b-spline and b-curve?

thx

thx all, I just think I have more control using bezier but I guess its just for me to learn the EP CV curvetools.

Pretty much just the math behind them and how you controll them. Every curve type has its advantages and disadvantages. There used to be a really nice description of all the different spline types in the Soft3d manual because it supported like 5-6 different spline types. Not much luck finding a good description on the web except this one(no pictures though):

I would sit down and try to learn maya's b-splines. They are much more powerfull than beziers' once you figure them out.

with maya's curves what the easiest way to go from a soft curve to a sharp angle ??

Go from cubic (3) to Linear (1)

I think thats what you meant.

Just put 3 cv's on top of each other.

doesn't that cause problems when using thoes curves to generate nurb surfaces ??

No, not really. Putting 3 cv's on top of each other is the same thing as what maya does internally when using the "Edit Nurbs > Surface Editing > Break Tangency" tool on a surface.

umm . very interesting . i've never put 3 cvs on top of each other . i've always end the curve from that point and start another curve and snap it on the last point of the previous curve and use ATTACH CURVE under CURVE menu . but i guess that does do the same exact thing . well . that is a time saver .

thanks beaker . i assume your quite strong at NURB modeling ?

The best way i found, is the "dagMenuProc for MultiDegree Curve v0.9" on Highend3d. You can switch while drawing the curve from a 1-degree to a 3-degree curve. It automatically closes the curve, if you want, in a very intuitive way.

when I started out I had tried modeling with beziers in MAX and I really liked it. I came from a background of doing 2d vector graphics using beziers so this was the ultimate method for me. When I started out in Maya I got very frustrated with the fact that you couldn't use beziers for modeling. Back then there where no plugs that would do the job either. At least none that I knew of.

So I descided to try modeling a fairly realistic human head in NURBS, lofting curves. It took me a couple of weeks but boy did I learn using cv's. I have perfect control nowadays, so my conclusion is; with a little practice you'll get used to Maya's way of handling curves. And then you don't feel the need for using beziers (OK, I would still like to have the option, but it's not that important anymore;) )
