Mental Ray can be slower than Maya's software renderer, but it is a more flexible renderer that is capable of superior quality. Learning how to optimise your settings is crucial to developing a good render process though, so I would recommend studying how the different options and settings for the renderer work, and how best to optimise them for your needs.
Gnomon Workshop have some good Mental Ray DVDs. I'd recommend buying the one called Mental Ray fundamentals (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/mha01.html) by Matt Hartle to acquaint yourself with the basics of the renderer.

start out using the presets "draft" for speedy renders when tweaking light and shadows along with shaders....then when working with the with FG and GI, keep the sampling at -2 , 0 with BOX until u get it correct.
When that is correct, you can slowly increase the sampling to get rid of artifacts.
