View Full Version : Shag:Hair question
::r|[o:: 11-27-2002, 08:58 AM A little question about Digimation's Shag:Hair plugin. I'm thinking on buying it, but it depends on the fact if it has the possibility to realisticly let the hair blow in the wind also with gravity taken in account and such.
The plug doesn't have to be as magnificent as Sulley's (from Monsters Inc) hair effects. But coming close to it would be nice! Could some users of Shag:Hair tell me their experiences with the plugin?
SHould I buy it, or are there better alternatives?
Thanx a bunch!

Shag's in-built dymnamics are terrible, but but but, you can use Shag extremely effectively in partnership with Simcloth and get really quite good and subtly convincing motion into the hair.
It's never going to be in the same league as PIXAR's in-house stuff of course, but the fact is there just aren't any viable alternatives on Max at the moment so it's the best you're going to get.

Thanks for your input Iain! I'll give it a second thought.
It's a shame Max doesn't have the same hair/fur capability's as Maya. In my opinion it is an important necessity in character creation and should be in any 3d-app by standard!
Oh well... maybe Max 6 will grant my wish.

At 3d festival Mark Snoswell(www.cgcharacter.com)(http://www.3dfestival.com/story.php?story_id=399 ) said they were making the shave&haircut port to max. Who knows :)

oh, and contrary to what may seem to be in the 3d festival interview.. Splutterfish is the company developping the port of shave to max..

Hi Iain,do you mean use cloth as a patch and attach hairs to them then animate the cloth so the hairs will follow?for the hairs' collision you still need to use shag:hair's dynamic isn't it?or some thing esle?
I don't use simcloth, but what about reactor cloth,do they work the same way?
Be more specify please,I definitely interest in it.:wip:

from a press release on splutterfish.com (http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/sf_gen_page.php3?page=press/ShaveSIG2002&printer=1),
Shave and a Haircut for 3dsmax is scheduled for release in Q4 of 2002. Licensing will include free network-rendering. Specific release date, pricing and distribution details will be announced closer to release.

If you select the Shagview Object (the hair in the viewport) you'll see that it has several "Convert To:" options in the Modify Panel. One of them is "Convert To: Cloth Mesh". If you check that box you can add your Simcloth mod to the Shagview object, and it then gets treated a cloth object. You would use it in exactly the same way as any simcloth object, you'd set up the character model as a deflector and calculate the simcloth solution.

WHOAAAH, that Shave and Haircut plug looks sweet!
Just the thing I need. I hope it's dynamics are as good as the visuals!
Forget about Shag:Hair, i'll just wait for SaH to be released.
Thanks guys

That's a very interesting piece of information Iain McFadzen, thx for sharing that info ! just tried it and it's very convincing, and a lot more handy to animate.

I'm also looking forward to Shave, but there's nothing in those renders you couldn't do with Shag right now.

It`s not necessarily what it looks like.. but more the stability, and the way shave works.. if you've seen the shave demos over the past months for lightwave, maya, etc.. you can see how different styling is with it, and i for one, like how it's done. Some have said it's more like styling real hair.. now, I've never styled real hair, but it's fun nonetheless.

Having used Shag for years I must say that I CAN"T WAIT FOR SHAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not to sound too neg, but shag has tons of problems. The current patch is much more stable but as eariler stated, the dynamics suck! You have to use simcloth to get anything crediable.
The demos of shag that I have played with are amazing! It works the way you would expect it would.
Can't wait for it to come to Max.

Is there a way to get a betatester for that shave and a haitcut for max plugin? We currently have a lot of testing Hairplugins for Max, the best i found was Shag but if there is a way to get a Beta we can test much more... you can see my last work with shag with the link in my signature
