View Full Version : Looking for a "realistic" grain plugin
SuperRune 01-02-2006, 03:06 PM Hi!
I'm looking for a better grain alternative to the one pre-built in Fusion. I've tested Grain Surgery, DFT Grain and Tinder Grain, and none of them looks as good as I've hoped.
We have one mac guy here at work who's using Shake, and Shake has this wonderful built in grain that I'd love to find a match for in Fusion. Here's what you get if you crank up grain density with a large-sized grain pattern:

Do you see how the grain actually consists of small blobs that come together to form the grain pattern? That's what I'm looking for! Its too time-consuming for me to do the grain in Shake at his station and then wedge that into my Fusion comp, so does anyone out there know of a Fusion-compatible Grain plugin that looks like the Shake one?
Thanks,
Rune

Hello Rune,
Darksim's Din (http://www.darksim.com/html/body_din.html) AFX plugin should do the trick.
/edit: On second thought... Din is more of a noise function than grain. You may be able to recreate the pattern but it is probably not worth the amount of time and effort. Sorry Rune.
/edit2: Magic Bullet Suite (http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/magbulsuit.html) is another possibility, though I have never had the chance to try it.

Thanks for your suggestions,
Yes, DIN didn't really have the features I was looking for. It could create a lot of nice splotched patterns, but nothing that would take the appearance of proper grain.
I'll take a look at magic bullet as well, I'd think it very strange if Shake was the only software on the planet that does noise in this fashion...
Thanks, Rune

shakes film grain tool. is actually inherited from silicon grail chalice, and cineon code which was aquired by apple in the whole shake purchase. Considering who developed these tolls (Kodak) its not suprrising that the quality is there. Now if they could just fix that whole undo and lack of anim curves for rotoshape thing !

On first sight, it looks like you could get a similar effect if you would take an empty BG, subtract a grain pattern from it (with some grain spacing and a tiny bit of blurring), and add a different grain pattern to that (to get both the black and white blobs - or negative and positive grain values if you are working in float space)... you can then add/subtract that to your image. Just group it all and you can have your own grain tool ready for any time you'd like to use it...

...and if you want to emulate the grain buildup as it happens in shake, try doing that using blob particles. That might do it.

Perhaps the S_grain from Genarts Shapphire box will do the trick?
Check out the demo at their site. (www.genarts.com)
Or perhaps create a macro that uses several fastnoise filters to generate the blobbyness
of the grain youre after.

The link to the file you posted didn't quite work, so I'll try to guess here. Are you talking about the actual pattern of the grain or the way it's distributed?
The grain in Shake has a slider to adjust the noise for the film or video behavior, which basically means that in case of film there is more grain in the middle values of colours and the highlights and shadows are left relatively unharmed. You can simulate that by pulling a soft luma key, and adjusting the amount of grain depending on the alpha or adding multiple grain nodes depending on the luma levels. A bit of a long way but it could work.
