I don't seem to be able to apply a constraint to an object that is within a character set!

Is this normal - how do I orient constrain a head bone that is in the set to a locator?

regards,

Magilla

hmm, should be possible. in fact this is just normal.

is there any error response in the script editor ???

It`s normal, the attributs are allready connected to the character set, maya can`t add connection and the message should be :
// Error: Connection not made: 'pCube1_orientConstraint1.constraintRotateX' -> 'pCube1.rotateX'. Destination attribute must be writable. //
// Error: Could not add constraint or connections. //

no it's not normal, all the joints are free in their rotations from start. there is nothing already connected in a normal char setup.

it can be that he has done a connection from something to the head joint, but probably not, because he wanna do it right now.

I try the manipulation, and maya refuse to add a constraint, i think these attributs seems be only connected to animation curves and not to the other connection type.... perhaps i do a mistake, but this doesn`t work on my test. i will try again with more investigations :)

Magilla talk about character set , not about char setup... if these attributs will be drive by an orient constraint, it is not necessary to put them in a character set, put the driver, in this case the locator, in the character set... :)

Yes I do get the error "already connected..."

If it's normal - why would anyone ever use character sets? - they are completely useless if you can't add a constraint to them.

I need the head orient control object in the character set so that I can save poses and clips - however in some scenes I need to lock his head to a locator. I now have two models that I reference - one with and one without the object in the character set. this doubles my work two update two chars every time I need to make a change to the original model.

Since the char set doesn't actually provide any rot info like a keyframe - why should it lock out the ability to add a constraint - seems a bit slack - maybe expressions will work????
