View Full Version : Raven

hello everybody, it's been a long time since I posted something down here but I am back with new stuff
I decided to go back to digital painting and here I am
Here is my current Wip, I am working on values instead of colours, when values will be fixed, I will be able to work on colours but the fact to work in a greyscale mode allows me to stay concentrated on mood, light, and coherence! It's an interessant way to work...
I am actually thinking about the elements in the background, don't really know what I am going to put there... I am kinda lost and hesitating. If you have any interesting proposition just tell me.
A lot more details need to be added to the clothes and of course the background environment
hope you will enjoy this WIP
comments and crits are welcome

i think the hat is a bit heavy for the frame of the body...but, i like the absence of too much detail in the background...maybe some mist and/or stark branches!

this has alot of potential, i love how you made the figure stand out. the hat is fine as long as you thin out the brim (take a look at some hats)
one thing that is bothering me, the figure is clearly looking at something, but we dont see what it is. what is he/she/whatever looking at and why? if they are looking away from the cliff, make the pose a bit more suggestive of that
other then that, i think this is going to be a fantastic piece! keep at it

thanks everyone, i think i won't overdetail the background, but it need some more details...
About the hat, You are right, I will try to slim it a bit on the brim
for the thing that the character is looking, in fact I want to create a relationship between painting and watcher. In fact, He is watching us as we are watching him. It's some kind of way to break it's 2d frame and to be part of the real world.
Don't you think it's a good idea?

great idea! make it obvious and it will work well i think :P

i like the colorless grayscale look. The shadows are more apparent, and imo, it goes overall with the mysterious tophat, the tight clothing - it seems sort of brooding.

here is an update, today between two website of flash I had the time to work a bit on the character
changed mainly his hat, face, and nearly finished the rocks
also added a bit of mist on the rock, this mist can highlight my character

character nearly finished
I think it will be a version of alice in wonderland, but a special one...
detail of the face

I like the concept at all, but i'd like to suggest something,
About the scarf you added.
The line of the scafr is a bit different from the whole concept, the back of the character, the hat have a soft arc, but the scarf is too crispy, the line is angled. and it has a bit too more dept. the scarf is a thin stuff..
BTW. i love the character much, it has a nice depressing atmosphere. If you add the colors, this will be one of my favorite !

great concept and composition! Keep the updates comming :D

thanks for the tip brutal monk :)
you are completely right, it's a non sense concerning the scarf
zng-y : thanks a lot

whats happening with colour. is it staying black and white?
01-07-2006, 11:41 PM
no, it isn't but I'm not done with volumes and values, when the composition and all the elements will be finished, I will add colours (don't really know wether I will go for a warm or a cold palette)

I love this painting what a wonderful concept. The composition and atmosphere are great. The only thing that bothers me is the lower half of the face seems twisted, from the middle of the nose to the chin it seems to slide to the right. Keep going this is going to be fab.

i liked the wings ...you changed to a scarf ...why?
01-08-2006, 12:58 AM
I also prefered the wings. Gave it a real nice odd touch.
You wonder if these are real wings;" is he a creature, but he looks human, not evil...but dark, wings could also be some costume, or a remnant or beginning of some transformation perhaps etcetc...."
think it's more intriguing that the scarf..

well, thanks everyone for comments and crits :)
I tweaked the face because I already knew the chin and mouth were off but I wasn't happy with my previous tweaked face (it's a bit special but I decided to save the "off face" because of it's general look) but I've given another try and here is a "right" face with right mouth and chin (aligned correctly)
I also tweaked a bit the sky and put back wings because you aren't the firsts to tell me that wings were better than a scarf, so I decided to put them back
reven : they were taken off because I thought that it was so "cliché" but in fact you are all right, wings can strengenth the general mood
here is the update
EDIT : it really bothers me to notice that the feeling isn't the same now that i tweaked the face, if I don't find a solution I will put back the slightly off face

well, i think I'm nearly done with volumes and values
added an extra raven to equalize the composition
here is the last wip before the coloring stuff
looks pretty cool
I would just take away/or rearrange one of the 2 towers on the right side... id prefer to take the one on top away .. it would make the composition better imo :)

Henry, you've established a great mood. Seeing her sitting there. I have this sudden feeling that a cane is missing. I guess it' because of the top hat.
Another idea that kinda struck me is providing her some activity in her passive pose. -> Thinking about her, stretching the arm against the viewer, bearing a pocket watch in her palm, or somthing like that.
This is definitly becoming great! :arteest:

concerning the watch I agree with you, It's a great idea and I wanted to integrate some watches in the image but i was hesitating, I firstly decided to put watches with little wings flying everywere, because time is running out, but the fact to give him/her a watch is also a good idea, thanks
concerning the composition I updated the last image and I changed the positions of towers
yeah cool .. i think ist much better now :D

I love it! Nice update, yea i love the wings more than the scarf! Raven rox!!!
01-08-2006, 06:43 PM
one more update, just tried to play with this watch
01-12-2006, 11:54 PM
its been a couple of days since i looked in on this...happy to see the wings back and the raven...conversations with ravens is one of my favorite passtimes! and my daughter just gave me a very realistic Raven puppet...so the wings are perfect and the sense of twisted time! the bird looks like he's thinking of stealing it!
