View Full Version : 2005 Reel
Aruna 12-30-2005, 03:25 AM Happy New Year! Or close to it. :)
I've just finished editing my 2005 Demo Reel. Let me know what you think. It's fairly short. I had a tough time of adding more shots to the reel, since some of them are much tamer compared to what's on there now! Here's the direct link (http://www.digitalgypsy.com/movies/aruna.DEMO.reel.2005.wmv) (right click save-as), or you can reach it through the front page of DigitalGypsy.com. It is a 15MB WMV9 .wmv file.

Top notch work! Many of my favourite effects moments in recent films. I was wondering though, which aspects you put into the shots? are you prmarily a compositor?

top notch work indeed! but since your're a compositor, you should add some breakdowns of your shots.

Wow, that's an amazing reel you've got there!
I agree though, I would love to see some of the shot breakdowns, especially to figure out what you did on each of these.

Awesome reel... cant imagine anyone would have trouble finding work with a reel like that.
I agree with the others though, give a shot breakdown - what exactly did you work on in each of the shots?

that is some amazing work, but I would definitely add that you are a compositor and add some shot breakdowns, cause I didn't know if you were the modeler, fx artist, texture artist, animator or what...u should make it more clear and aside from that you have some beautiful work...great stuff.

Awesome work!
Would love to know which app you used on which shot and why... Or do you have some detailed discussions over at vfxtalk?
Great Skill.

Gotta love Tippett. And you gotta love compositors reels because they are always chock full of final renders :)
Btw, the music is by a group called Cake.

Thanks for the kudos.. Every year I put together a reel just to keep myself on my toes. I don't necessarily send it out, it's just for giggles. If I were to send it out, the DVD would have the necessary information on it to state that I am a comper (on the cover letter and breakdown sheet). I have some breakdowns and descriptions in the Case Studies section on VFXTalk, so check those out if you have questions about certain shots. It's become much harder to put breakdowns onto my reel, simply because I don't have time after a show has wrapped to create a breakdown. At the end of the show, most of the shots are offline, and it's very hard to get them back online. The song is Arco Arena, by Cake.

It's not often that I post crits these days ('cause frankly I suck myself) but I agree with others:
Do breakdowns. If you've worked one films like Constantine, Hellboy and Matrix Revolutions then you really shouldn't have much trouble finding a job :D but what would help would be a breakdown shot. It's especially hard when trying to crit, and I'm guessing you want a crit if you're posting it here, if you don't know what to crit ;)
Asides from that, put it out on something other than WMV9. Put it out as a .mov or divx/xvid. Not everyone can view WMV9 you know :p

cool reel but doesnt really represent what you did or what your talents are. I saw the same shots on 30 other reels. You definitely need a breakdown.

What is with people on the forums these days that don't read the rest of the thread besides the first post? Geesh. Last time I publicly announce a new reel. A Quicktime reel is here (http://www.digitalgypsy.com/movies/aruna.DEMO.reel.2005.mov). It's 50MB. It should be done uploading in 35 minutes (@11:30pm).

This was the first demoreel I viewed in 2006. I've being pushed to a new level of CG. It's just amainzing. The waight of compositng was executed very well.
Hope you will do more amaizing things in the future !

I was kind of wondering that as well, especially now that he's shown some information on what he did and backed up that it is in fact his work.

Hey Aruna,
Nice to see all this stuff put together in a reel. Lots of really great work, plenty to be proud of there. I appriciate the trouble you are having getting footage for breakdowns after a show has wrapped !!
I only really have two comments. First, I think that the big finale shot from ghost ship with all the ghosts swirling around the ship is nowhere near the quality of most of the work you did at Tippett. I would suggest dumping it as it adds nothing to an already very strong reel.
Second, I don't understand why you have placed a countdown on the reel it seems a bit unecessary for something which is not for broadcast ?!

Good tips for next time. That final Ghost Ship shot was a joint shot with another artist who did the final comp, so it makes sense that I should drop it from the reel. I was only responsible for water splashes as the boat enters the water. I'll cut it next time out.
The countdown and fonts used have been on every single reel that I've put out. It's just a consistent thing that I've kept around. It was done a long time ago on a flame, so I can't change any of the fonts or my name being masked on and so forth, unless I can get on a discreet box and access my DBeta archive! Usually there's music for that section, but Arco Arena is such a short song, I wanted to cut to the music and not spend it on the countdown. I'll see what options I have later this year when I do it again.

just to reiterate. awesome work !
the countdown doesn't look bad, I just wonder if you need it on such an otherwise tight and stylish reel.
I'll be posting my reel and relaunching my website as soon as I get some clearances from former employers. Showing most of the work I have been doing in the past year. Not going to be as impressive as that, but I hope I can get some feedback when I do.

Dang Aruna, good job. I was gonna post my first professional demo reel next month when Final Destination 3 hits theatres... but how am I gonna follow up a reel like that? :)
Any do you guys know what's going on? He just posted it for fun, he's not looking for a job, he's a lead compositor at Tippett!
Anywho, the reel is off the hook!
