He Jordan, looks great.

Just some tips about markers in general:
*Use alcohol based markers, preferably with a big chissel-tip (I use AD-markers).
*Start with the darker parts and keep making them darker and darker, while slowly painting in the lighter parts at the same time. Every time you paint a bit of the lighter part, make the darker darker aswell. Don't smear in the dark colors right away. Build them up slowly, but don't be afraid to end really dark either.
*Leave the white parts open. Your paper is white, so why not use that. Will give a nice open feeling about it.
* When you're finished (and only whe you're finished) take some white gouche paint, or some typists correction fluid, or any "covering" white paint, and tip in the highlights (don't overdo it). That will completely bring your piece to live.

And just for a matter of taste and personal preference, when you're after a piece with some feeling of power and motion in it:
*Keep your black linework rough and sketchy.
*Work fast, don't look at it as an illustration, but as a sketch.

Keep it up, markers are much fun to draw with :)

Markers are so much fun!

cant really give any advice since jeroentje basically said everything i would have said!

here's a couple marker pics i did a few years back :)

http://exurostudios.com/render_tests/2d_art/marker_pics.jpg

keep it up, markers a completely different world when it comes to art!!

they are a lot faster......and mainly a one shot deal.....they are easy to screw up, so dont get attatched to what you are working on and be prepared to throw away a lot of paper before you get what you want!!

but yeah, like he said, build from your darkest shades really light, then work your way up to dark!

and the reason he said dont be afraid to go too dark is because most people just learning marker rendering tend to get scared when it starts getting dark and the dont finish the image to its full potential!

so, dont be afraid to go all the way.

Another thing i learned when working in markers are, for the most part, BLACK IS THE ENEMY!!!!!

if you need a dark color to mix into the pallete Burnt Umber tends to work wonderfully! and it looks more natural!

well, enjoy, and remember, always have a nice piece of asitone handy when working in markers, makes a GREAT pallete!

Happy Rendering!!!!!

that technofrog pic is really cool :)

Keep it up........def give color a try, its a whole new world......color markers are a lot more like painting.....you need a color pallete to dip into :)

Im, having lots of fun with my wacom though, so i havent really done much real media color work in a lil while

Prismacolor sucks. They dry out very fastly, and they give stripes when you paint larger surfaces.

These are the best markers money can buy:
AD markers from Chartpak ( www.chartpak.com )

geez, a lil harsh there! lol!!

if i get a chance ill try em, but i wouldnt say pismacolor suck.....ive used em for years and havent disliked them, nor have i found them to dry too quickly........its all a matter of preference :)

seems that the ones you suggested dont have to fine tip on the other end......i like that for detailing.

They have a big flat tip, so you can rotate it. But I hardly detail markerwork myself. I use it to work fast.
I used prisma's aswell. I would never say something sucked I hadn't used myself before (like Copics), but AD's just last longer.
Most important is the big surfaces thing. Prisma's tend to give stripes when you want to work fast.

jeroentje's tips are all very good. From the look of what cha' got here your lights and darks(contrast) could be futher apart. The highlights will make a big difference in your work. If you havent already, check out:

www.artbyfeng.com
and
www.dchiang.com
Both have excellent tuts on their process.
and

who is a moderator for this forum

And jeroentje I believe AD markers might be xylene based. They are great markers but I would only recommend them on marker paper they bleed a bit for me on typing paper.

I prefer to use the Letraset Tria markers. They are a little on the expensive side but include 3 nibs are refillable and are one of the only, if not the only, markers with true pantone colors :)

My Tria black is my fav marker :) and has the scars to prove it hehe

I always wanted to try a set of the AD's though for larger area work.

Absolutely true. But I would also recommend people to use marker paper in the first place. Not in the last place because it's thin and you can trace your sketch on the final paper, wich saves a lot of time (sketch with a pen or a fine liner than, btw).

On a side note this thread caused me to break out the markers again, and I noticed something. I do have a single AD marker its my BIG blender hehe, but I also have the letraset for fine blending. The AD flows so much that it will remove alot of the color if I want, with an absorbant sheet of paper underneath.

Go get that paper, I would like to see more.

What paper do you prefer btw? Ive always used the bienfang graphics 360... never really tried another makers marker paper.

I use Schoellershammer (http://www.schoellershammer.de/eng/prod_werbung_grafik/grafik_markerfest.html).

Hmmm I never even thought about a coated marker paper... That looks / sounds really nice. Now... where to find in the US heheh (I knew you would post a paper stock that I wouldnt know of or would be linked to a european site hehe).

If you cant find Schoellershammer look for Graphics360 by Biefang. They usually have it in office supply and craft stores. The only thing is it tends to work better on the back side of the paper. the front tends to give a blotty look for some reason.

Pretty good man. You're really getting the hang of markers and i know how bad it is when your stuck with crappy marker paper. Your pigment lining really accentuates the form well. Particularily on the ribcage. It would be nice to see some more definite lightsourcing. Otherwise, keep it up.

looks really good.....the problem i think though isnt that the paper is crappy.....i think you are using the wrong side (as thats what it looks like when you do so) try flipping the paper over :)

Since you are in Oh Canada, they might sell Borden & Riley Pure Rag 100 marker paper. Almost no bleeding, and smooth. But enough tooth to hold pencil drawings too.

Well, all your marker works are really good to me. I think i should try to practice with them. Too bad 'artist''s materials are a bit too expensive here in mexico.

no man.....lol, all marker paper is like that. The glossy waxy side is facing up....and that is the side you are "supposed" to use....but what happens is, if you go more than one pass on it it starts to get all nasty like that.........which is why when i learned markers we were told to try using the other side.....it bleeds a lil more, but it doesnt get all funky and gets a LOT better results IMO......but, marker paper is always "upside-down"....give it a shot :)

The Borden&Riley paaer I mentioned above has no waxy film on it. Its just a good paper. But their website isn't working right now, so I don't know where you might be able to buy it in your neighborhood.
You can keep trying bordenriley.com (http://www.artproducts.com/borden/index.htm) maybe it is only temporary.
