View Full Version : Interested In Learning Shake but....
Hello,
I'm interested in learning Shake, but I'm on a XP 64bit WS.
I understand they don't make Shake for Windows anymore, I could just by a apple laptop.
Is there a student version of Shake (similar to Adobe, Alias etc.), becasue I don't have 8k to give apple....
I'd like to do some heavy compositing with my renders.
Is AfterEffects suited for 3D or is it just for text and vector 2d workflow????????
Thanks Fess

There is a demo version on apple's site, 30 day demo license which you can keep on subscribing to, save is disabled and limited to 40 nodes.
http://www.apple.com/shake/trial/
Also it's not 8k, only 3k on mac and 5k on linux.

Just use AE or Combustion or DFX. All are under 1k and will work perfect for learning your first compositing app. AE is probably the cheapest for a student.

If you're looking for more of a learning tool, Anioni Edo (http://www.anioni.com/edo/index.html) might be something to look in to. It's fairly straight forward to use, and best of all it's free :buttrock:

As beaker said the shake trial is an option but its very limited. If you are interested in learning compositing then After Effects educational is a very good option.
I would also seriously recommend having a look at Fusion 5, as it is verysimilar to shake in its workflow, runs very well on windows and includes some of the best tools for compositing 3d on the market today... ie vector and uv channel tools. full .rpf and .rla support. 3d object and camera import and a lot more. I beleive that Eyeon offer an educational version.
Hey everyone,
Thanks for the help on this subject.
Reveiw your suggestions and decide

dunno what apple likes to stick into their laptops as far as graphics are concerned but i just had my first shake crash in four years of usage of mainly windows, linux, irix builds. happened in version 4 on a mac mini, which as far as i understand, uses a lot of laptop-like technology and is performance-wise comparable to some of the powerbooks. was my first try at running shake on ati graphics and a laptop harddrive. definitely no fun for heavy compositing.
Well......
I've gone ahead an purchased AfterEffects Pro.
I still plan on learning Shake some time in the future.
I just don't understand why a seasoned company like apple would make such a assinine desicion to drop production for Shake on Win OS.
Vexed :banghead:

Mac minis are for email and itunes. Thats a pretty far from ideal spec setup for shake. I think shake on current g4 laptops is also unreasonable. I apple announce really beefed up laptops at Mac world as rumored and offer them up as decent portable workstations.
I hate running ati cards in my mac and have gone for nvidia in my G5. As mentioned drive speed is a HUGE factor in compositing so Raid 0(striping) is a big help, new pc laptops can do it, maybe intel for mac laptops will be able to also ! Please !

Considering the slow and shaky pace of developement since apple took over shake it is doubly frustrating

aneks, no doubt that the mini isn't targeted at shake ;) but i thought my experience might be comparable to that of a small-medium powerbook running that app.
2.x ran great on windows, truly a shame.

Hey Deke,
Actually that's the version that I started using Shake in a few years ago. I heard it started out without a GUI entirely but don't know much about it's early history or development cycles before then, other then that the folks at Nothing Real were friendly and incredibly open to user feedback.
If you get some time, can you shed some light on some of your earlier experiences, pre-2.4?
(Sorry to hijack the thread, just curious).

I started using shake after the gui came out, 2.1 or 2.2. Whichever one didn't have motion blur on rotoshapes. remember a new version came out and THAT was there big feature !
it used to be light grey
there was no quickpaint or rotoshape node only quickshape
the layer=> layer node (now defunct) used to be called layer macro.
um..... logLin was called dlogC.
lots of other stuff but its too long ago to remember !
