View Full Version : Maya getting slow after 10min
3dsoft 11-26-2002, 03:06 PM hi,
I am running Maya 4,5 on my sony notebook. 1.6 GHz, 256mb ram, ati 7500 radeon card on winXP.
The program works fine the first 10 minutes but then it starts getting real slow. Every move of my mouse in the workspace has like a delay of 5 sec.
This happens eventhough I don't do any complex stuff.
I even turned the undo function off but it didn't help either.
Any idea??? Help needed.

XP needs with some add ons running (like real player and so on) about 100-120 Megs, maya needs about 100-120 megs to run, so that sums up to 200-240 megs used without even a sphere created.. i would guess you have a lack of ram..
check the task manager to see if you run out of memory, when it gets slow..
a slow mouse with delay usualy is the best indicator that windows starts to swap
cheers

your gfx card could also be a problem....iv never had any probs with ati's and maya but iv had a few problems with geforce cards running out of ram...i know you dont have a geforce but you do have a cut down ati.
best bet....
next time it happens open the task manager and see how much ram your using, if your low on ram/or into swap its most likely that.....if not it might be your gfx card.

hi guys,
thanks for your fast reply.
Well, I just tried it again and checked the ram when it was getting slow. But I was only using 220 mb out of 256 mb. So I guess that it can not be the ram.
It's really strange. Other 3d programs like Max work fine. PLease don't make me go back to Max :-(

What are you doing primarily right now?
You can build a lot of stuff in 10-20 min in Maya.
Remember to delete the history on things you are building, often.
And also when check what XP is doing. I've read a bunch of stuff around here about using "windows classic" mode on XP and that cures many headaches for people.

That's funny, the same thing happened to me in Half Life :) .
I just opgraded the Graphic driver and the problems disapeared.
I had run Maya on a 400 MZ, 128 Mb Ram, 16 Mb TNT Graphic card without problems.
I do not think this as anything to do with Maya.
Your hardware is strong enough, maybe it's somekind of conflict in the hardware or bad drivers.

Hi all,
I am already using the "windows classic" mode, and deleting the history doesn't seem to help, either.
I will try to upgrade the graphic driver and if this won't help it will be eventually the gfx card...

Do you have the problem in both fullview and four-split?
If it's only in fullview. You can instead of maximize the viewport u can drag the cross between the viewports. May help.

...smaragden you just wrote what I was about to say.
Just did the driver update a minute ago with no noticeable difference.
While working after getting into slow mode I just changed the 1 pane view into 4 pane view and I couldn't believe it.
back to smooth and fast !!!
Now, can someone exlpain me why the 4 pane view is fast and the 1 pane view isn't? This is weird.
Anyway, seems like I got to stick to the 4 pane view...

It's the nVidia slowdown problem.
You need a highend graphic card to get rid of it.
I also had problems with the nVidia slowdown problem, for some reason it disapeared in Maya. But im still having the slowdown problems in 3DMax.
It's a commen problem in any 3d app.
