Well, you already know what I'm going to say...: I WANT THOSE BOOTS!! :D
Very nice designs as usual, you really nail the outfits for your ladies - they don't have much on but it's in the right places ;)
Good luck for the Blizzard contest, do you think you will finish this time?
Sorry for not being as present as usual, not only am I on a dial up connection, but a slow and unstable one - I will be here cheering when possible.
Have a nice sunday, lots of texturing to do, right?

Haha, I didn't see you there (nor Dimi) so perhaps you are somewhere in the Atlantic together! No, I really hope you can make it next year, I really would like to go to ComicCon and then SIGGRAPH as they are a week apart and in the same city, San Diego, I believe. I think between you, me, Lolo, and Dimi we could down a lot of beers!
Let me know whenever you want me to do a paintover mon petit Stephounette!

@ thebest : ahah , oh man , thank you , I only regret we can't see what people are posting , if there's already a winner or , if nobody has submit yet and just wait the very last minut to submit their work ....
@ Beckie Returns : Ahahaha , and now I can't stop picturing Dimi swimming in the ocean with me on his back yelling : go U nut , we're gonna be late ! :scream: ....
Yeah I have to submit the idea to the team and see if they could organize their schedule to it ! San Diego sounds great to me as any other US city since I never went one ... :D
You guys will have to be nice with me about the beer thing , I'm a rookie .... pfff , who am I kidding ... :scream:
Ok let's get serious for one minute : well you can do the paintover whenever you have some time to spare .... absolutely no rush , because the lady is pretty much in the exact same position than before you left , except now she got colors on her ... then I worked on the other character which I will finish the modeling in a couple of days so ... maybe I'll need your review on that one too .... see ? I will give you some work to do ... ^^
Have a great weekend , lot of spam to do right ? :p

hey is looking really good, no girlie to my taste, u can try making just a little bit wider the tip of the chin, just as a test to see if looks a bit stronger , but looks very cool the way it is already..
about me, well a bit busy with some freelancing you know how it works ...and willing to incorporate to a nice studio, hope i can do that soon....please keep on the fine arts here bro!

Oh my! (fainting) a pretty male! Really nice modeling as usual - what kind of character is he going to be? Maybe making him a bit rougher in the features could make him more masculine but for a young man this looks already ver good... so, when will you start giving classes? :)
I am practising modeling now while waiting for my broadband connection - almost three weeks left before I get it

Stephounette,
WOW! Another beautiful model to admire. :) Only crit at this moment is that the head seems a bit small relative to the neck and clavicles / shoulders. But this model has of course your special trademark look of ease as though you barely broke a sweat to create it. Stunning work! :)

@ rattlesnake : Hey Jorge , thx mate , yes I did have the feeling that mabye the guy is a bit too young , your chin suggestion was actually a great idea ... I also added a chin dimple , manly ... :scream: ...
about me, well a bit busy with some freelancing you know how it works ...and willing to incorporate to a nice studio, hope i can do that soon....
same hopes here too , well I gues it's same everywhere ... good luck to you I hope you're gonna find something great too ... I already started to see if somehow it would be better for me to move , maybe UK , US .... don't really know yet ... :)
@ Gunilla : wheeeee :bounce: ! How ya doing Gunie ? feel like the team is reviving ! thx as always for your great support , he's actually going to be a Paladin , so yeah I think is gonna be pretty tough in his outfit so ... (no thong I guess:D ) .... I'm currently seeing if I can old him up a little ... maybe a beard ...
classes ? ... oh dear I don't know about this ... To be honest I had a thought ... I would love it for sure , I do like help others when I can , I'm just afraid that the areas I'm comfortable with are too few , you know ? (boots classes?:scream: )
maybe I should learn myself to practice other stuff ...

@ Rebecca : wheeeeee ! thx a lot hon , at first I thought maybe the neck was I bit short , but now you're telling me maybe that's the head which is too small , gonna make corrections ...
Btw I did have a thought about the whole thread's name thing , and maybe the actual "anatomy thread of" is constraining people to make only anatomy related models ... or maybe I could have a naked version just for us ... :)

Stephounette, you're right about the naming convention, and I will try to get around to changing the names...as you can imagine, this just takes a lot of time, and I am still recovering from SIGGRAPH trying to get back into the swing of things...too much partying has made me lazy!
No, actually SIGGRAPH put a nice punctuation mark to what really amounts to the one year anniversary for the Anatomy Forum ~ it was started in July 2005 so it was nice to sort of have a break at the end of a really intensive year. It's amazing to see how much the forum has grown / is growing thanks to the contributions of awesome artists like you, so I look forward to another great year!

@ SONIC-X : YES !!! glad to hear mate ! so maybe you could open a thread right here ... *whistles* :)
@ Rebecca :
you're right about the naming convention, and I will try to get around to changing the names...as you can imagine
Well , I know what you mean , I'm wondering if the whole Anatomy forum banner we're all under could permit us to post in our thread some work which is not completely anatomy related ... I mean I realize that the character I'm working on right now is gonna be pretty much armored from the feet to the top of the head ... So is this kind of work has sense in a "anatomy thread" ? ... In the other hand I do like the fact that everyone here has his own thread to show his work and could receive crits and and comments from any other artists no matter if they're doing 2d or 3d , all about form and style and beyond the whole technical aspects we got , you know ? ... So I guess characters/animals/monster are pretty much anatomy related anyhow. ... aren't they ?
I do like also the naming convention , I think it's more personal , and if that make your work easier , great ! Letting people choose their own thread names could be a bit messy me think , I mean could I really call my thread like "Stephounette's modeling thread a gogo" ? ... it could be fun tho aha .... Perhaps the "Sketchbook thread of " is the better , except for 3d people ... I don't really have any suggestions tho ...
trying to get back into the swing of things...too much partying has made me lazy!
Nope I believe you're just giving your others 50 arms some rest ....

Heh, the thing people forget is that it's the Artistic Anatomy and Figurative Art Forum ~ creatures, animals, everything related to the figure is welcome here. :) That includes armor, etc. ~ what I'm mainly less interested in is seeing this are become the general 2D / 3D WIP area, since we already have that as separate forums. :) I think keeping the focus here on figurative work is beneficial because of it's narrow focus, but that narrow focus includes (at least in my mind) anything figurative. I'm less inclined to see houses, trees, etc., because I think that's more suited for other areas of the forum, and doesn't relate to the figure. :)
I do like also the naming convention , I think it's more personal , and if that make your work easier , great ! The forum isn't set up for people to be able to change the names of their own threads ~ for better or worse, that's not something within my control. ;) A person can name their own thread when they create it, but they can't change the title afterwards ~ only a forum leader can do that (which is not something I have control over). I personally think it's better to have a naming convention to keep things organized ~ I've started to change peoples' thread titles to "Sketchbook Thread of *name*" since that's what the majority voted for. However, in your case, "Sketchbook" doesn't really make sense since you're a 3D guy, so I've left it as "Anatomy Thread of Zapan" and attached - 3D so people know you're a 3D guy. If you want it changed, just let me know, and I'm happy to do so. :)
Also, keeping a naming convention which includes peoples' user names is beneficial in a way that people forget. If someone on the forum wants to find your work, and they search for your user name, they won't be able to find your thread if you've named it "My AnAtomY thReAd RoxXorz!!!" or something like that does not include your username. :)

:D Thanks Steph! I know it's a bit confusing. As well, I worry that calling things "Sketchbook Thread of..." will make people think that anything goes...well, anything goes that is figurative. I can't really effectively critique renders of cars :D nor do I really want to see that here...it's for another area of the forum. :)

Great image Steph, do you have a high res of the wire anywhere? I'd be interested to see what you've done with the armour :).
Very nice occlusion pass, haven't seen a lot of gellato stuff so far and that looks like a solid endorsement of it. Great pose too, almost a shame to have the helmet on it looks like the head is very well done ;)

Hey friends !
@ Cyanid : Thx a lot , I know what you mean about the sword , to be honnest , I didn't spend so much time on the sword and the shield , I'm planning to make some research to improve these .... and see what kind of details could be added to make them look better ...
@ SONIC-X : Hey Corrie , thx a lot , glad you like him !
@ Lemog : hey Laurent , thx a lot for your sweet comment , you did an entire castle ? how am I not surprised ! :scream: ... well the guy design is really twisted from the original Diablo artwork , I believe that never such of armor ever exist ... mmh , I'm not sure he could be able to run or ride a horse with all that stuff :) ....
@ Gunilla : Hey Gunie !! thx a lot dear ... believe me I'm not snailing right now , but I guess some whips could be usefull anyway .... :curious: huh ? :scream:
In fact I used Gelato only to render the occlusion pass , the shader is the basic blinn from maya ... but it's really easy to use , maybe you could give it a try one day ...
@ daWinky : Hey Sabie , thx a lot ... vite , vite ! I wrote that on a post-it and glue it on my screen ... :)
@ flaeticia : Bijour mademoiselle :) , thx a lot , nope the shader is the basic blinn , combined with 3 lights (red, yellow , white) , a final gather pass and the occlusion pass from Gelato ...
mmh... a chance for me that Kwak doesn't hang out so much around .... schhhh ...

Have all a nice week end ... be back later for the spam session ...

The wire looks great! Very clean. You really know what you're doing. The knight is turning out very nice. Can't wait to see it textured! :bounce:
Could you show the closeup of the face? In wireframe. I always mess up the corners of the lips. Must learn from people who know how to do it.

Always very beautiful Cadet... hard and sweet. Just take care with the "bouclier", it need few polys :scream:
PS : Really good design of the armor... terribly fantasy and medieval... and a little touch of Star Wars... the helmet make me think a little to the mercenary of Star Wars  maybe a rocket pack soon ? :banghead::p
Heheeyyy! Coming back to spam my Stephounet's thread! Always great things, especially in modeling - aaaargh *jealous* :D...maybe there'll be a Modeling Class by Zapan next time?

Steph,
I've neglected the personal threads for too long, I'm feeling really guilty about that...I'm gearing up for an interview soon and trying to finish my thesis (by December, no less!) so to say that I'm a bit frazzled is a massive understatement. :D
But I've certainly admired your model and I really love this figure. Perhaps the only complaint I might have is that the upper arm is just a bit thin, but otherwise, good lord, this model is just gorgeous! Please continue to grace this thread with your excellent work my friend. :)

Morning friends !!
Sorry for the verry late reply ...
@ razz : thx a lot man , sure here it is :
http://perso.orange.fr/zapan/Samael/Samaelwireface.jpg
I have to say that sometimes I just can't get the lips right too , I can tweak and tweak for like an hour without getting anything better , but sometimes it just comes out on the first shot .... that's weird
But if somehow it helps you , on the third page (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=305159&page=3&pp=15) of this thread I put a picture of my modeling process for the lip ...
@ Gunilla : ahahaha , I know ... I actually started so many things like the floor , the background , the textures , the pose , without getting anything done ...
Pink armor ? Like in the power rangers ? :curious: :scream:
@ Lemog : aww , thx a lot Laurent , yeah I saw about the shield , I guess some extra polys there couldn't hurt ...
Star Wars helmet ? ouh I have to check that ... don't want to have to put a lightsaber on him ... :D

Big thanks, Zapan. All I needed. I'm trying to model a character of my own and this time I want to do it the right way. And..erm..to the finish. I should be pushing polygons tonight :)
One question, what about edgeloops? Do you try to make them correctly when modeling a head or if it's for a still it's "what looks correct, is correct"?
Looking forward to some updates :bounce:

I'm so sorry for acting like a ghost lately ...

Anyway I was pretty busy reorganising stuff and I'm also trying to save some fuel for the next challenge ... which should put me back on the right tracks , hanging out with you all ... :)

Heya team ! :wavey:
Been a while ... I thought that it's time for me to get out of my hole to start something new ...
It's a picture about the theme of an emotion and I chose to depict the fascination/envy ...
So it will involve a little girl and a big bug ...
I only have two weeks to have the picture done so it's pretty much like a snail race ; I hope I will make it ...
The bug is already done , and I started the girl today ... my goal was to create a 4-5 years old girl but due to the lack of references of kids (I don't have any and apparently it takes some time to have one of this age ... and there is no guarantee that it could be a girl :D ) .... every suggestion and comment is more than welcome ... :)
http://perso.orange.fr/zapan/Emotion/Xiangface.jpg
I know the girlie thing is really not obvious , maybe the hair will do it more ... :banghead: :argh:
Anyway , feel free to tell me what you think of ...

Where have you been??? :D Great to see your new work, damn it's hard to find something to crit. :) Only minor thing is the forehead seems a bit too high? Maybe from the side it could slope back a bit more naturally, and perhaps add a bit to the back of the head?

Hi Stephane! Great to see you back posting!!... Awesome start on the Kid's head... just a few thoughts about tha back of the head and neck... 1)would be nice if the volume at the back of the head could shift upwards a bit... and 2)the neck looks a bit thick for a kid.
Just did a paint over to illustrate... I dont know if it looks right.. just a suggestion.. hope you dont mind!:D

Hey Stephan! she is turning out beautiful!!:bounce: Interesting to see how you are doing the hair! Are those surfaces Nurbs or polys? One little crit: the collarbones look a little too sharp, and the inner end could be a tad lower, looking at the distance between the chin and the pit of the neck. Actually it could be almost an inch lower.
btw, that bug is really cute!:applause:

02-22-2007, 08:23 AM
Steph! This is really stylized for you. :) Teeny crit, the collarbone seems a bit sharp / stylized? The eyes from the side may need a bit more socket? I dunno, it's late here and my eyes are nearly closed (it's hard to tell the difference but you know what I mean) :D but it's good to see your steady progress and *ahem* where is my pink bug? :D
Cheers!

02-22-2007, 08:43 AM
Oh yeah - she's looking real sweet. I'm really curious to follow in your steps for the hair - looks like a good approach. Will you Unwrap and texture each part individually?
Have you thought of her outfit yet? I think she could look good in a really big pair of rubber boots :)
Zapan
02-22-2007, 08:43 PM
W00t !
@ anandpg : thx a lot mate :) , hairs are poly plans ... usually I use Nurbs plans with maya , but I don't like nurbs in max ... so I rather prefer working with polys with this package...
Thx for pointing about the collarbones ... will correct that right now :)
@ thebest : lol , yes the eyebrows are pretty big like that ... see below with the alpha map hope they are better this way
@ Rebecca : Thx Beckie , yes I'm gonna fix the collarbone , in fact it didn't bother me that much before , but now you and Anand are pointing this up , this keeps catching my eye ...
About the eyes , I admit I have problems to have them right ... I keep tweaking that area but it's still weird on some views ... I have to tweak again ...
I dunno, it's late here and my eyes are nearly closed (it's hard to tell the difference but you know what I mean)
Unfortunately I really really do ... Last month , a friend of mine asked me "-Do you see with black frames like in the 16/9 movies ?" :scream:
where is my pink bug?
Oh my good god ... I can't believe I actually did that (http://perso.orange.fr/zapan/Emotion/Oryctespink.jpg) ... :scream:
@ Gunilla : Thx a lot Gunie dear ... well there is a little test concerning the hair ... it's pretty much the same technic I used for the elves ...
The first plan is unwrapped and textured then I duplicate and modify the plans to cover the entire head ... so you really have to unwrap and texture only one plan :)
About the outfit ... mmh , rubber boots could have been real nice :scream: ... but since we're gonna see her from the front and framing on the head , I got to say that I even didn't make the legs .... but I cute shirt and maybe bracelet and some jewelry could be nice ...
Hair test ... and right before Rebecca asks ... she is not suffering from alopecia ... :D

Hey Stephane! awesome! cant wait to see this textured and lighted!!:bounce: please remember to post a step-by-step of your shading. 02-25-2007, 09:51 AM
@ thebest : Thx Tony , well before starting the textures , I need to get her on pose in the scene ... but I will try to do that as fast as possible , thx for the great support :)
@ Rebecca : Thx a lot Beckie , I gotta say that the chubby cheeks helped me to get the youth of the character , but I do think that maybe it's oversized ... well maybe it will reduce a bit with the expression on her face . About the star rating , that's really ok , eventhough I would be lying to say that it didn't please me to have 5 , but 4 is already great and I 'm very thankful for that :) .
@ anandpg : Thx a lot Anand , do you want a step-by-step of the hair shader or the future skin shader ? .

Hey Cadet... the progress is really good on her... me like...
I have the same feeling about eyelashes like Anang... here, that make more young woman than girl, not ?

@ daWinky : Thx a lot Sabie ... I will try my best to update as soon as possible . Thx for the splendid support . :)
@ Lemog : whee Lolo , about the eyelashes , I usually modelise them , but this time I tried to apply an alpha map , easier to correct the overall shape without selecting each on , one by one ... Will try to scale them up .
Yeah I know what you mean about the nurbs plans , that's the reason I also use nurbs for creating hairs with maya ... :scream:
@ Gunilla : aww thx a lot Gunie ... the eyelids too much square ? ouh have to chack that , thx for pointing .

aww - she's cute! I agree with Lemog about the eyes but what jumped at me in particular is the nose - it's totally a grown up person's kind of shape! too narrow and sharp for a little girl IMO
this girlie (http://www.sfhats.us/images/030913-014Little%20girl%20in%20hat.jpg.jpg) is about the same age as yours and you can see how wide and flat and round her nose still is :) hope that helps!

Salut les coupains ...
Hey Mag , thx for dropping by :)
Ok maybe some of you noticed , but I had to cut off the furry pink beetle/mini Beckie project. Not because I got bored but because I finally started my big project ... ( sounds the same to me) ...
Totally different style , basically it's gonna be a really long and ambitious project with a lot of characters , monsters and stuff ... and since I already imagine some people faces in front of their screen , I planned several months to make it ...
I got inspired by the old warhammer style and that's why I wasn't up to post it here (not sure if the theme project fits here) ...
ok , started by the skeleton squad ... I used this base skeleton mesh :
http://perso.orange.fr/zapan/Naggaroth/BaseSkeleton.jpg
And then I started the dress them up :)
http://perso.orange.fr/zapan/Naggaroth/Skeleton1.jpg
The right one totally cracks me up :scream:
Until now , I got 4 ... 9 planned ...
Let me know what you guys think of
cheers ,

HEY...Zapan...
That mottly crew is FANTASTIC.:applause: ...I can almost hear those bones and armor clicking as they go into action..:scream: ....They remind me of the skeleton characters in the old SINBAD movie that I used to love when I was a kid, and still do :) ..GREAT IDEA. Can't wait to see where you go with them...:)

Wow Steph, great to see your new project - awesome stuff as always! Definitely shades of Pirates of the Caribbean...but the pirates need a pink beetle...not? :D
Cheers!

Ploup ! :)
@ anandpg : aww thx a lot mate , glad you like it ... will try to move pretty fast ... (sounds unusual to me)
@ Lemog : thx very much Lolo ... in fact I never been really afraid by skeletons , to me spiders or butterflies are way more scary than monsters or zombies ... that's weird :scream: ... But these aren't supposed to be very scary , it's rather the opposite in fact , probably they will be the funny part of the picture ... :) thx for your kind words .
@ SpiritDreamer : Hey Glenn , really happy to see you , and thanks a lot for your kind comment . I do have a lot of fun modeling these . I never saw Sinbad ... err , guess I'm too young ... thx friend for droppin' by :)
@ Beckie honey !! , great to see you , and thx a lot for your kind words , I'm really excited about this new project . I wanted to create this a long time ago , several years in fact , but now I got the machine and some spare time , it think it's time ... I've never seen Pirates of the Caribbean ... not even one ... how lame am I ...
Maybe I could merge the 2 projects ... beetle skeleton ? pink skeleton ? mini Beckie skeleton :D
OT : Hey , I saw you got a cintiq ? ... wait a sec ... a Boxx AND a cintiq ? ... will you marry me ? :scream:
Glad you like the idea ... will try to post the next 3 pretty soon , thx friends
cheers ,

*hops flight to france* ;) Hehe, well, the BOXX is at home, and the Cintiq is at work, so you see, life is never perfect. :D I'd like to see the mini Beckie skeleton - maybe you can start a new series, Powder Puff Beckie Skeletons? :D Hmm, I've had too much soda this morning...no more snailing for you then! :)

Ohhh! Those are some cute skeleton warriors! :love:Bravo!
It's really impressive your base skeleton - all parts seems to be there ... and at the right places too. Very well done :)
They remind me of the old game - "Dungeon Master" Did you ever play that? Are you going to animate them? I'd love to see them perform some kind of dance.
This is going to be nice to follow. But so are all your projects. Especially those who gets finished :D
Good to see you rollin' ol' snail!

Hehe, well, the BOXX is at home, and the Cintiq is at work, so you see, life is never perfect.
... mmh , guess you're right ... mmh , is every teachers got a Cintiq in L.A. ? :D
You drink sodas in the morning ? that's weird ... well , maybe not as weird as eating fries at 3.am :scream:
@ Gunilla : hej Gunie  , Thx a lot dear ... I think I've never played "Dungeon Master" ... was it the game where you had to raise and train trolls and gobelins to build your castle ?
Animate those fellows could be really hard .... especially considering how lousy I am at animating ... In fact they are really quickly rigged to get the pose but no complex rigging to perform a dance ... but funny poses are still allowed :) ...
This is going to be nice to follow. But so are all your projects. Especially those who gets finished
ahahah .... err ... it's true ... but this one is soo huge comparing to the others ... it's kind of frightening ...
ok , two more :)
http://perso.orange.fr/zapan/Naggaroth/Skeleton2.jpg
The real difficulty is to find a different kind of outfit to each skeleton ... since they are skeletons the weakest warriors , they don't have a particular sort of armor or weapon ... they just put on what they find ...
Let me know what you guys think of
cheers ,

No, this was much earlier - on the Amiga. At the time when 32 colours and 320x240 resolution was enough to keep me up late nights :)
Lol! I love the pose and look of the right one! Really fun.How about giving one of them a broomstick? That should be low level arms if anything :D

ahaha , Yeah I thought about funny stuff like this ... tree branches ... Ice spike ... high top hat ... Santa's boots ... :scream: ... Maybe I should change the entire concept :D

Steph, that is awesome! That has to be the most fashion conscious set of skele-warriors I think I've ever seen :D - ready to wear, and ready to fight - now that is pretty impressive! :)
So cool, what are you going to do next? As Lolo would say, impatiently waiting for updates!
EDIT: I think on the flag there should be a really fashionable boot - and in French maybe it should say, "The Brotherhood of the Boot"...La confrérie de la botte according to Babelfish...:D

aaaaahahaha :scream: ...
Maybe they were female warriors ... please burry me with my boots since I got them 50% off ... I have to consider making one with bunny sleepers ...
what are you going to do next? As Lolo would say, impatiently waiting for updates!
Well , there still 4 skeletons left ... including one playing drums ... aha ....and then maybe a new squad ... Guards actually ... less funny ... And since I have to get back to the school tomorrow , it will be harder to find time ... but that's not a surprise to anyone :D

The Cadet version was updated at first view... the new version is really faster... nice to see...
well...these guys are fantastics... just for the moment their poses seem too much nice... and their weapons too much clean and new... I like to seem something more impropable... skeletons could do more differents things than humans, no ? more funny and more creepy poses... certainly possible, and that could give a higher level to your composition... just my thoughts :wise:
Good courage for the following... and don't forget to keep this kind of energy :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Hi...Zapan..:)
Just a passing thought that might be useful to you..don't know..
Maybe a few missing teeth, cracked eye sockets, fractured ribs, broken dislocated jaws ect...from past battles...might add that extra touch of realism that Lemog just mentioned....maybe even have one dominate giant among them, bigger boned, and more battle scared...leader of the pack kind of thing...Just a couple of thoughts..:) ..REALLY LIKING THIS CONCEPT OF YOURS...FANTASTIC POSIBLITIES...:bounce:
CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHERE YOU TAKE IT TO..
