You should check out the tutorials at LightWave 3D (http://www.lightwave3d.com) , particularly these ones for Texturing:
Texturing for dummies 1 (http://www.lightwave3d.com/tutorials/surface/texturing_for_dummies-001/index.html)
Texturing for dummies 2 (http://www.lightwave3d.com/tutorials/surface/texturing_for_dummies_002/index.html)
Texturing for dummies 3 (http://www.lightwave3d.com/tutorials/surface/texturing_for_dummies_003/index.html)
Texturing for dummies 4 (http://www.lightwave3d.com/tutorials/surface/texturing_for_dummies_004/index.html)
There are plenty of other ones there too, dealing with Gradients and the like and as Proton said, they are trying to put up tutorials three times a week, if not every weekday.

a very easy and basic way to start is to play with automatic sizing, different axis's (y, z, x), etc. you can pretty much do anything with that. god forbid you have to get into UV mapping, lol.
thanks guys, you know ive seen these before, forgot about them... thanks
