View Full Version : North Sea landscape
ACantarel 12-26-2005, 04:46 PM Well, I´m still a pure noob in painting images with my tablet. I´m coming from the 3D-corner and want to try out other forms of making images.
This here is still very WIP and I posted it here to get some comments, tips and suggestions related to lighting, composition, colors and so on. The image itself shouldn´t be an image with a lot of action. Just the mood of a silent and colder day at the coast of northern Germany. It is painted completly out of my mind. I think I´ll need to add some fog and desaturate more the colors of the objects which are more far away.

So if you have any ideas, just write them down :)
Thanks a lot!

Hi André,
The picture is already very nice, good composition - the only thing I don't like yet is the lighthouse...the brick-texture, the proportions... And you will surely work more on the sky and the water...so I'm curious do see an update!
I'm doing the same as you, trying out a little 2d to learn something new, so no technical tipps from me...
Nett, mal etwas anderes von Dir zu sehen...:) !

Hi Sabrina,
thanks a lot! But the more often I look at it, the more it looks pattern-like to me. The Elements doesn´t seem to fit to each other. The style of the stones to the sand to the fence... is too different. I think I´ll cancel this and start a new one and try to do the complete image in one technique.
üben, üben, üben... :D

I think the sky looks a little too flat. Try varying the values there- the colors are great. The sand dune looks a little unnatural, tacked on somehow....you need more atmospherics. Usually on a cloudy day like this the horizon won't be so clearly defined and the sky would reflect on the water's surface more.......
Try looking at some photoref, that could really improve what is already a very promising picture.

sieht schon verdammt jut aus ... ( looks already damn well )
... but i think the color of the lighthous is atm still to strong as you self already mentioned, just destratuate it a bit, that should help ... cant wait to see the next step

Colours and composition are great.
Picture, hoever lacks depth. Try painting in some haze and perhaps render the terrain differently so you can see more than just one plane of it.

Thanks a lot for the comments!
I havn´t started with the sky and the water yet. The gradient is just a placeholder. The lighthouse is also work in progress ;)
It´s not easy for my to add some mood into this flat looking image. I don´t want to do use too much lighting contrast because on these days the illumination is like a skylight (if you have a 3d package, you know what it is :) it generates a very diffuse lighting all over the scene) but on the other side, this makes the image looking flat. Tricky... :p
So I will not cancel this one and try to make someting interesing out of it.

Good painting, good colours, good mood and great textures!
But the composition is a dead stop. By that I mean there is nothing leading the eye into the focal point dramatically. Try having the fence coming towards the audience, or have a few branches of the tree lead the eye towards the light tower. Another thing to note is the ocean. Its acting like an anchor that stops the movement of the eye because it has no other parts of it that leads us into the rest of the picture. What you can do is either lower the ground a bit so you show more water mass. These should spice it up~ Keep up the awesome work
