Thanks gordy :D

I love green...40 shades of it where I come from, hehe. I think it's just about one of the richest colors out there, even though our eyes are supposed to see more around the red wavelength.

Or maybe irish eyes are just more accustomed to seeing green...

Here's another speedy I did earlier, will probably fix it up later:

Hey, thanks Valentina! I love bumpy noses, they have so much character, don't they? I think noses are hellish to paint, but if you do them well, they add so much to the work.....

Now time to post my first bit of 3d modeling...a wip, but i got frustrated and deleted it after taking this render. Crits on this would be really helpful. In fact, crits on ANYTHING in this thread would be helpful! Done in max, 3 hours work...

Aaaw poor fish... I like eating fish, heheh...

I think the fish's expression is wee too dramatic :)
But I don't know what you're aiming for.
Since it's underwater, I would keep an overall blue hue. The way the colors are now, it's like they are outside of the water instead of in the water.
The composition could work, maybe it's a bit too cramped.
I like the way you make the seaweed wrap the octopussy's arms.
It's like they're moving with the water, good job.

Bleurgh. I don't think I'm improving anywhere near as quickly as I want. My stuff is too cartoony, I need to do some more realistic pieces.

Maybe I'll do a few copies, just to get myself into that 'flow'...

adam-crockett
02-01-2006, 06:09 PM
Just work from observation. Paint friends, set up still lifes, carry around a sketchbook and paint in that with acrylics. Copys are good, of course, and useful for learning purposes, but I think its ultimately reinterpreting an interpretation. Observing how light acts in a natural environment is super helpful.

Also, when you want to execute a painting, go make tons of sketches. You have a fish and an octopus, so why not go to the aquarium and study them. You could also check out books and do anatomy studies from that. Make color studies of underwater scenes. Pause on a frame in a movie and make studies of that.

Just some suggestions off the top of my head.

You're doing great! Keep it up!

I really like to think (wish maybe) that I have something in common with the masters around here... You say you have the cartoony style, which I enjoy more than anything else. I really like the style you have- combining the awesome painty stuff with real dramatic expressions. And an octopus. :D

Now I probably have ZERO room to critique, if anything it's my stuff that needs help... but for some reason the tourist one doesn't look that exciting... perhaps a little more contrast, and the baby's hand looks too small.

So yeah, great stuff. Must learn from you...

Hi PC,

You're doing great on this Tourists scene, i like the little baby (s)he's very "cute". (Peace)

The sky looks a little bit empty to me , though.( need more structure in the clouds? or a little bird or balloon....) On the the other hand, when you think of this scene as a book cover then its titel would fit there perfectly :)
And the contrast might be set a little bit too high, it takes away some nice color details in the hair

Looking forward to some more ....

Great job on the background too... they really are tourists... American? :D
I agree with M.E.L regarding the tubby's shoulders. I think you should extend his shoulders a bit more behind the girl's head and maybe also reveal the upperarm a bit. Define some wrinkles where the arm meets the armpits, it's a bit flat right now, suggesting a continues chest. The way it looks now, it's like his right hand is comming from nowhere.

paperclip
02-05-2006, 09:30 AM

Lol. I have like 4 moniters in total, a tft, a crt and a laptop (and an old pc gathering dust). I just keep moving ot from screen to screen to check the gradients.

Although I have all my moniters very bright. At college all my work looks dull and washed out on these old 15" crts.

Strangely enough I have my photoshop set so it displays all my work with a very yellow brown hue. Not sure why I havnt fixed it, but I seem to be painting really well with it still on.. :P

Nice this balloon head girl, you've got a very original style and the arm fit's in fine.

I've been severely ordered by becca to do grayscale studies, so you guys won't be seeing colors here for a while! Sorry!

Ah its just a project I'm working on is staleld till we find one. And until it gets going again I'm not earning anything.

Having said that i really want to get someone who has genuine creative flair. (like you)

Btw do you want to come on cgcast tonight? I'm looking for people to talk with archerx and me on the cg podcast?

-Simo

Hey, that sounds interesting. I have free time- pm me if you want to move ahead with this. I'm very flattered, by the way!

I have a bunch of environment sketches in my challenge thread- check them out and see if you like them.

As regards the podcast- what exactly would that involve?

Thanks, fallofmart! I've been practising relentlessly, knowing that eventually I have to improve. Eventually it becomes instinctive, particularly using desaturated colors to play up saturation in other areas. I love color!

Hey Paperclip, ofcourse you're past the gesture sketches and value studies that I'm doing? Because I think after a lot of life drawing and painting, and working from ref, it's really just a matter of developing your instincts and pushing yourself past the things that feel like your weaknesses. Like for me, I already start to see that it's 'angles': my stuff tends to be too cute and overblended. I think yours tends to be a little chaotic on the colours, maybe?

When I was in artschool (writing, that is) I benefitted hugely from comments by classmates and working together professionally. I think you should always seek out the company of people who can point out your flaws and are slightly better than you. I guess we're both in the right place on this forum:)...

Hey Clippy,
Are you doing life drawing and painting? Cause with student-artistst I look at (especially me) I think could use more study from life. I find that if I'm not doing 6 hrs a week than I'm cutting myself short. So, ya, that's my thoughts. Figure drawing, head painting, and plein aire. Hope that helps.

paperclip
04-14-2006, 06:37 PM
Excellent suggestion, bryan. I have no access to life drawing models at the moment though. I decided to bribe my little sister to pose for me (she actually agreed to pose for one hour a day six days a week for only 10 euro per week! slave labor! Don't worry, I'll give her breaks though.) So expect my pictures to start looking more like young teenage girls. :P

Wow, Bob! Thanks for the encouragement- I love your work and am very flattered that you've complimented mine!

Do you think this is a boring concept? The look I'm going for is that she's lost at sea in a small boat and she's trying to put on a brave face, but is actually rather scared about the whole thing...sent out a message in a bottle already. I think I'll put some paraphernalia in the dinghy to show her journey more clearly.

Do you have the comedy/cartoon Asterix & Obelix in your country? Because her boat reminds me of Obelix, who is an enourmous big fat humorous kelt with a round, stripe-covered belly. I keep cracking up at the sight of that boat. Not sure if you were going for that effect but I think you were, considering the flags etc...:)

Her pose is not entirely right imho. From the chest down she looks a little stiff. For the rest this is nice, I would like to see an even bigger background so she's more lost. Good luck!

A sudden thought: how deep is the boat? Because unless it is very deep, she needs midget legs to stand like that:D...

Aloriael
04-19-2006, 02:34 PM
she could be standing on her knees :)

The chest seem to be facing a different angle to the stomach area and hips... you might want to look into that... it's just that it doesn't really look natural to me... a bit unattached...but nevermind that.

The arm with the sword seems a bit long.
Because a girl with large breasts like that would have her breast blocking out most of the arm length at that angle if the arm was the correct length.

If you shortern her arms it would make her chest look larger, just a thought for future reference.

The composition could be more dynamic. Change the horizon line so that it is not parallel to the edge of the picture. The water is calm, and the sky is bright and sunny. Maybe those could be more chaotic for a more exciting story. The sinking hulk of the ship she escaped from could be in the background, telling more of the story and adding to the composition. Those birds could be carrion birds, circling her, waiting for her demise.

I guess my point is that the scene is quite calm and serene. If you wanted it to be more dynamic, or excting, or tell more story, you could add bits to the composition that show more drama? Just thinking out loud here. I like it so far.

On the "craziness encouraged" tip, make it the same concept, but she's afloat in space. Burning space cruiser chunks floating behind her, bubble retro scifi space helmet on, still holding a sword, god knows why. Ignore me. I just like sci fi.

Hi Clippie,

I noticed that you seem to have a firm grip on the basic underlying structure of the face. However when you render, it seems you lose the clear definition of mass, and features appear like they're floating in the face on their own. I think that is particularly the case with your noses. That's why I'd say, for the rendering: maybe have the basic masses a bit more defined (by shadow) and then render from that. It sort of all tends to get a bit sloppy, a thing I like very much about your work but I think is sometimes standing in your way.

Please don't take this as a harsh criticism, you know who I am (and where in my own process;)) and that I really like your work. Hope this is helpful:).

PS. Looking at them again: they are already pretty good! I was looking with an extremely critical eye to see if I could find anything to help you with. But I could see, on second thought, that you do have your shading sorted out for a good part already. You could push it farther, that's all.

aaarrrgh. I'm overexplaining! But I mean well:)
