This is a project i have been working on between other projects for school. It still needs some work and things added. The tires are there just to show reference. Any suggestions would be helpful?

Id say it was looking good, when there are some proper tires there, and its all textured, it will be better.

where are you taking the FX class? And that's a great top fueler. Wondering what type of mesh you used and program that you utilized. Think that the 57 chevy might become a dragster now!!!! Maybe I'll send it to you for the class. Top fueler and Stock. What a race......

ok well... its an awesome model. I drag race myself in the dom braket with my camaro.

video (http://www.cdis.org/~talos/air.WMV)

and i would just like to ask a few questions.

the supercharger aka. blower "snorkel scoop" is a bit to long... and those thing attached to to the scoop are not wires, they are fuel lines... so it would look alot better if they were thicker in dia. with a nice stainless steel look. remember if its a fuel line, they have little red tube ends... solenoids < hmm can't remember how to spell that :P

looks good so far

Being a drag racing fan myself, the one thing that strikes me immediately is the rear tyres are too inflated, they need to be low in pressure and the sidewalls are very soft so you get a 'twisted' sort of look in the tyre walls, the rims look too big to me too.

The body is too high off the ground if it is standing still. When it runs, the rear tyres expand vertically to lift the rear end up a bit and the body bends a little when at full accelleration to give a nice curve. You can always tell a good run when you see that curve!! :D

Also the scoop looks as though it has just been placed on top of the blower, you need to build in a manifold of some sort.

hehe, my two favourite things, 3D & drag racing!! :bounce:

Looking GOOD!! :applause:

That rear tyre looks a little small, but the lower pressure is definitely getting closer to real life. Having a quick serach around my drag racing website, found a couple of Top Fuel images (we tend to concentrate on bikes, so not too many cars there) if you need bigger pictures, let me know & if I don't have them here, I should be able to get them within a day or so...

it rocks.

shouldn't have more exhaust pipes?i mean a V12 should have 6 on each side.Yours is only a V8 i think. and rear tyres as big as a dinosaur, covered with superglue.

Emre, no top fuel dragster I have ever seen is anything but a V8 (except a few concepts years ago with dual engines etc!!!). You can see there are only 8 cyls on the model, check the spark plugs etc (oh and a technical point, no glue on the tyres, only on the track, after a burnout, the only thing on them tyres is rubber & heat.

Krazy, can we have a side on ortho version, to me the wheelie bars look too short at the mo.

I have to agree about the back tyres, they do look a bit tiny for a drag racer, but what do i know : ), it's an awesome model, and i think that you should find another budlight side sticker or make one, it kinda looks dodgy like ripped from a photo and pasted there dodgy, but it could still be me.

Hey, I know I'm replying a lot, but just thought I'd mention the cable(?) running from the blower down to the back of the cockpit. what is that? I don't recall seeing anything like that on a real dragster. Is it some form of throttle linkage?

krazy3d
02-06-2003, 12:48 AM
yeah it is supposed to be the throttle. its hard finding pics of what it really looks like. i still need to make the tires bigger and probaly fatter. as the plugs go there are two wires for each cylinder. and no its not a 16 cylinder its only 8.

looks nice, but I'm unsure on a couple of technical points (orientation of the mags etc.) I'm emailing a mate of mine who built & run his own Top Fuel Bike (european record holder, several times champion etc) for more info, I'll pass on all I get back.

I wish I had the patience to build one of these (or a bike) I have tons of reference shots for bikes :hmm:

Looking very nice!

A couple of crits:

1) Where is the blower safety hold down set up? I think you know what I mean.

2) You went to the trouble to model the teeth on the belt, but where are the grooves on the pulleys?

Good stuff so far!

OK, here's a reference image that's pretty damn good (though the car has just been totalled, so slight damage here an there) It's not my image, so I won't link directly to it, but go to http://www.feel-the-noise.com/ where some friends have a stack of photos, the one I'm referring to is in the Dragsters->Top Fuel->Barry Sheavills section. There is a side image of the engine in car before a run & one on a truck after the damage. Also under Daryl Bradford section is a shot from the rear of the engine. Anni also has a complete section on engines under Pit Photos->Engines. A couple of fuelers in there.

Hope that helps

Is it just me, or does the engine look slightly cartoony?

I love the detail! Detail can really make a model stand out!

knifejuggler
02-07-2003, 05:39 PM
I think it's just the material/renderer that's making it look that way. once that sucker's painted it's gonna look DAMN COOL!! :buttrock:

hey guys thanks for all the comments and sites with pics. i have been looking allover for engine pics. its harder than it looks to find. it is going to take along time to make it look exactly perfect. for right now im just getting the basic parts down to make it look good. maybe later on i will put all the safety straps and covers on it. but if i do that then it covers up alot of the things i have already made. again thanks for the comments and crits

02-07-2003, 07:16 PM
Not to get you to avoid making the engine perfect, but if Top Fuel dragsters are like normal dragsters, then each engine will look slightly different. Different parts, slightly different settup. Again, I'm not sure if Top Fuel engines are all the same or not. Depends on regulations I guess.

When I make an engine, I always go for the "generic" look, unless I'm doing a Hemi or a Flat head or something like that.
