Hi, my hard drive on my Gateway is dying. It is usually under a pretty heavy load as i run it constantly on either batch processing images in Photoshop CS, or it is moving files from external hardrives and such. It has 1.5 gig of RAM, and 200 GB of HD. It is my main work computer, and I am starting to worry that all the stress its been under is finally taking its toll on it. Its symptons are increased lag on simple processes such as opening Photoshop, viewing folders, etc. If anyone has any solutions to my dilema besides buy a new HD that would be greatly appreciated. Oh and I do plan on imaging the whole HD, but that is a last resort method.

OS?
How much free space do you have?
When was the last time you defragged it? Scandisked it? Virus scanned it?
etc...

That has a lot to do with your hard drives performance. I would recommend buying a new hard drive, backing up your data, running the above mentioned tests.... Even buying the absolute minimum space hard drive will save you headaches. If not - burn it all to CD.

Hard drives need regular checks on them, defragging them also saves a lot of time. Virus checking is a must, as is spyware. Don't do the same mistake I made by assuming that your system is safe, always back up your data. Usually you should be safe with files, at least files containing graphic data, as viruses usually attack EXE's. But you can't be too careless. Always run a virus check at LEAST once a week. Defrag your hard drives once a month.

If all this doesn't help, BUY A HARD DRIVE! Even if it's external, hell... if it's external the better. Nothing is worse than losing a years worth of material to a hardware failure, I should know.... ALWAYS back up your stuff!!! I would recommend doing this right now, even if your hard drive is perfectly fine just clogged up..... you never know....

Does the hard drive make clicking noises?? That is one sign the drive is dying.

The Final Resort Will Be To Put Your Laptop Througth Some Last Stress,
Copy Everything You Want Across To Another HD, And When I Say Everything You Should Put Only What You Want Not What You Can Simply Get Again Of The Internet Or Something Like That...

Format Your Hard Drive And Reinstall Your OS.

I Should Probably Tell You To Preform A Virus Check Before Doing Any Of This As Most Viruses Might Not Do Anything Noticable But Slow The Hell Out Of Your Comp.
