View Full Version : Floppy drive format
kwshipman 11-26-2002, 02:26 AM Why does my new computer say that disks that I used with my old computer are not formated? They work fine on my old Dell running win98 but my new comp with win2k only recognizes some of them. If I format them in win 2k they wont work in win98. This is only the case with some of them, some can be read by either comp.

Oh, I'll join in. Some old floppies (about one third of the floppies we have in boxes) refuse to be formatted in Win2k. No matter what I try. Any floppy experts around?

Yep, we have this problem occasionally at work.
Quite a few people (not everyone though) seemed to suffer from it, when they upgraded to Win 2000 on a NTFS partition from any OS that was running on FAT/FAT32.

Sometimes its a loose floppy cable, reversed floppy cable, nicked floppy cable...or the floppy drive has gone bad.
Also can be any number of problems with the 3.5 disk. Those things aren't exactly durable :).
I of course tend to approach everything as a hardware problem though hehe.
