i had checked there are two similiar cpu for the socket 939 opteron. 140 and 240. they are the two cpu of same speed. but wht is the difference in other ways?

actually i want to buy a opteron cpu supporting socket 939. and i want to buy 146. so now, which one is better? the 240 or the 146? i am going to use it to be overclock. i had heard that their ability to oc is excellent.

oh by the way, could any one give me some advice on a single opteron motherboard supporting dual core and pci-x display card?

merry X'max.

I don't think the 240 is available in 939 as it is designed to be paired with another 240 and there is no such thing as a dual socket 939 MB.

Now, you may consider the Athlon 64s instead though as I think you can get a higher clock speed for the same price. While the opteron has 1mb of cache, a higher clock speed will win over cache in rendering.

u sure there is no socket 939 240 opteron? i had asked the hardware dealer. :argh: ....

and, i had heard the overclocked 146 opteron could be compared to fx-55, oc to 3G. it p/c ratio is obvious.

There is no difference between Opterons of the same speed grade. For example, you're comparing Opteron 140 to a 240. They are identical, EXCEPT, the 240 can work in systems with two CPU sockets (dual processor systems), hence the 2. 140s cannot. They only work in single socket solutions. There are no socket 939 Opteron 240s. There are also no motherboards that are capable of dual socket 939.

Actually, there are 3 grades of Opterons. The 8xx the 2xx and the 1xx. This only indicates the number of CPUs you can stuff in one system. So if the Opterons are all the same speed (840 240 and 140) they should all, if in a single socket system, give the exact same performance.

Another thing I should mention is the difference between the Opteron 1xx and Athlon64s. There isn't one, at least not in terms of performance. This is especially the case when you compare the AthlonFX to the Opteron 1xx. So saying you can OC an Opteron 140 to something like 2.5 GHz and have it perform better than an AthlonFX at 3GHz, is a bit silly :P Since they are basically the same chip, clock for clock they will perform pretty much identically.

The idea that Opteron 1xx can OC better than the Athlon64/FX is because they are supposidly built from the higher quality CPU dies that AMD produces. Because of this extra "quality" the Opteron has higher OC potential. Basically it means the QA testing for Opterons is generally more rigid, and the chips will be more stable.

for veteran like u, money seems to be not a big deal, but a 146 opteron cost us$120, the fx cost.........., LOL...........

and i could also save a lot on the board. i think the nforce 4 chipset could not make too much difference to the nforce 2xxx chipset, especially on the aspect of computer animation. is it?

I never said that. All I am saying is clock for clock, an Opteron 1xx will perform exactly the same as an AthlonFX of same GHz. However, you cannot buy an AthlonFX at 2.0GHz (the speed of the Opteron 146), thus buying the Opteron 146, is a good option, if you desire the 1MB cache. You can then OC the 146 to the speed of an FX-55 or whatever, and save quite a bit of money. But at the speed of an FX-55, dont expect anything more than the FX-55's performance :P

Secondly, the Nforce 2 chipset does not have a socket 939. You are pretty much limited to these choices when you look for a motherboard:

Nforce4
Nforce3
Via (ew)
Uli (which by the way was just bought by Nvidia...)
ATI Radeon Xpress/Crossfire

I would also say that motherboard makes a ton of difference in graphics work. It determines what kind of graphics card, CPU, RAM, HD, and periphials you can install into your system. Not to mention stability.

And BTW: money is a big deal to me :P
