View Full Version : MIDI control
stoecklem 12-23-2005, 04:43 AM Hello
I have a general question about using MIDI to control motion graphics or compositing applications. I am not a MAC user but am impressed with what I have read about Apple motions ability to use MIDI to animate parameters in real time. Most of my little experience is in Combustion and I don't believe it has this capability?
Are there any PC compositing applications that allow MIDI IN to control animation in real time?
(Digital Fusion has something called the MIDI extractor but can't seem to find any information on what this is)
Any information on this subject may be helpful. Thanks

It would indeed be an interesting option...! :scream:
As far as I know can Fusion only import existing *.MIDI-files, so you won't be able to control it realtime. But I know that you can use your MIDI as a motion-capture source, within 3Ds Max! That's a really interesting thing when animating and so! :)
So as I do have Max, I would do the realtime-motioncapture (of the MIDI-source ;) ) in Max, and then export the values to After Effects or so. :)
Good luck & I'm looking forward to your own solution!~

Thanks
I am also interested in using MIDI to control 3-D applications(I have a peavey PC-1600 that I hope to get working with XSI one of these days) Would it be hard to transfer the animation data from MAX or XSI to after effects?
MIDI control seems common in 3-D but I also believe that it could open up some interesting possiblities to have MIDI controlling parameters in your compositor(for experimentation, pre-viz, camera movements, motion graphics)
there is a plug in for Newtek's video toaster 4.5 that allows MIDI in and MIDI out of video toaster. This could allow for some interesting connectivity between applications(ex. controlling XSI camera movements from toaster in real time).
I'd really like to be able to capture panning and zooming of stills in real time which is something Motion seems able to do easily with MIDI.
Anyway if anyone has any knowledge about MIDI's use with motion graphics and compositing packages or someone that can enlighten me on what Motion can actually do with MIDI I would be grateful. Thanks
