View Full Version : Big Moan about the Bone!
matty2x4 11-26-2002, 12:23 AM OK so I have been using 4D for about 1 year now (when I get time).
The one thing that has had me stumped from the start is boning an object.
Dose it actually work? Before you start I cant afford the upgrade to 8 right now. My main gripe is all the documentation I can find always deals with solid poly mesh objects not ones made up of different bits (see attached). The whole Vertex map thing appears to work fine on these types of objects, but I can't ever get bones to work on my objects no matter how hard I try (read and re-read, (all of Adam Watkins I can find)). They just end up warping and distorting till they look like a Dali painting.

this was done with the assigning of a toe, heel, shin and thigh Vertex maps to the Shoe and pants. And re-reading Chapter 13 of "the cinema 4d hand book" AW. Still no joy
You can tell me straight if you all want,
Am I thick or somthing?:p

I've had the same thing. ISTR that if any bones have a restriction tag then they all need one, and you set Strengths on the topmost bone first, then down the hierarchy, or something. Have a look for my "Bones - Help!!" thread the other week, the answer is in there somewhere.

knight42 got the main thing right which is your definite issue, that you need restriction tags on every single bone, even a zero bone needs a restriction tag, the restriction tag does not need to restrict the bone a any specific mesh, it can be totally empty, but every bone must have a tag.

Also pick the top most bone and set the strength to 10. It looks like it could be on 2 - the default.
I am rigging right now and I dont enjoy it at all.

Personally the only time I think I'd mess with the distance strengths is when doing something like a tail, other than that it's all weight mapped for me (or at least until I buckle and get r8).
I'm not disagreeing or anything but sometimes I do get an effect like that foot warp when all my vertex tags don't add up to 100. Like I might want the space at the back of the knee to be affected only a little bit by the shin bone so the polys don't stretch, I'll only weight them to the shin restriction at like 70% and the other 30 to the thigh, and as I was saying, if the thigh were like 20%, it wouldn't follow the model and distort like that.
I'm a control freak that way. :)
