Geometry|Vertex|Join

Assign this ot the J key if you want it like lightwave.

Just click space to drop the tool or click anywhere that isnt your model to dop selection. :)

if you open up your key editor (system|key editor from top menu, or F2)and paste this as the command for the key you want, i think it will work.

vert.join [0] [0]

for ctr+w. press down the 'control' button in the key editor, to see all the commands mapped to ctr+ [any key]. find ctr+k, click in the slot next to it (default is set to scene.close i think) and paste the above command. it welds verts to the last selected vertex.

i usually just use the space bar to drop the tool. it keeps the workflow fast for me.

hope that helps.

If you don't want the dialog that tells you how many verts were joined just click the 'in the future' arrow and select 'hide message'.

I prefer to press 'q' to drop the current tool - it's right there on the home row where your fingers are resting and it puts you back in selection mode

If you want to drop your selection w/ a key press Esc

I prefer to map the dropall script to shift-q to drop the selection and the tool at the same time (you can find it on vertexmonkey.com)
