Gamma_Bomb 11-25-2002, 10:39 PM I'm getting ready to download and try it out, but I wanted to know if anyone has encountered any problems with it or if its pretty easy to install and try out. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

the ínstall is easy, no problems
well, i can say that the raytracing is really a bit faster than in maya and the motion blurred raytraced reflections works great.
Gi, final gather and other things are good, but you'll have to spend some time learning to tweak the render parameters, but do not worry.
But if you want to get deep in Mantal ray with custom shaders, etc, you are in trouble because the documentation is not so good

Oh yes, i just mentioned that because the really advanced things arent well covered, but GI, final gather, caustics, etc are in the docs.

Try placing 2 lights one with intensity 1 and with intensity -1 on the light you have set to 1 cast the shadows and tweak to you get your results.
The light with intensity -1 will soak up all the light cast by the 1 intensity light but will leave the shadows untouched and will not alter the lighting of the render.

I'm also a Mental Ray newbie.
I was playing with some Final Gatering yesterday but without any good result.
But today i got it to work nice.
Try create a Point Light and set Decay Rate to Linear.
Turn on Final Gatering and set Resolution to 100.
In The camera Attribute Editor set the Camera Background Color to a Dark Gray.
