View Full Version : Exterior Tutorial needed

I need help on exterior lighting, and rendering.
I am working on this house and i cant seem to get my lighting and render nicely.
If anyone has any links on good tutorial on this kind of problem please share it with me.

Assuming that you've done the tutorials relating to radiosity, advanced lighting that ship with max, you could have a look over at cg architect.

Have you tried the advanced lighting > light tracer? works great with a skylight and another light simluating the sun. Very simple system and works well as long as your don't require good render speeds in high poly scenes.

hey thx for the link dude, but it only has lighting tutorials! Awsome, got some great tricks off that site, But still need render tutorials...

I am trying to use the light tracer and a simple skylight at the moment, lets see how it turns out !

Thx alot for everyones help.What kind of render technology are you using? Default scanline, V-Ray, Brazil r/s, ....?

Ohhh sorry dude !

Forgot about that, my apologies.
I am currently using v-ray latest version for 3ds max 7.
But i am opend for any other good results, i am trying to make the render as real as possible.

what kinda light setup do you use right now in vray? i use a direct light thats good for sharp shadows the intesity is around 1-1.2 and vray environment gi multiplier .8or.9, primaray bounce irridance map and secondary quasi monte carlo for just one frame render and light cache for animation. you can experiment with different light cache presets to get desired result. i prefer adaptive subdivision for antialiasing min rate-1 max rate 2. from this point on you can fine tune your scene. reduce hsph sub for irridance map for faster rendering i can afford 30-35 for my rendering.

Hummm that might just work, I am currently using a vray light but it is expoding the scene like giving an overbright illumination!

So now i am trying diferent ways. i will try yours! might work thx dude.

Max comes with a Sun System. I don't think I used it at all in version 7 but I took a look at it recently in version 8 and it has options for using a standard sun system or an IES sun. Simply add it to your scene, point it north, then set the location, time, and date and the system takes care of the placement for you. This in combination with a skylight should be useful.

I'm not familiar with Vray but with MR I usually have to play with the trace depth, global energy multiplier, and the decay depending on the scene to get good results.

If you want a speedy yet pretty good result, perhaps look into making a "skydome" with direct lights with very low multipliers. That is, make a direct light pointing at the middle of the scene and make it's radius reasonably big. Change its pivot to the middle of the scene and then (in side/front view) rotate/copy it around 180 degrees with maybe 5-6 copies. Select all the lights (in top view) and the rotate/copy them 180 degrees again with 5-6 copies. You should then have a hemishpere of direct lights. You will have to muck about with multipliers and turn shadows down/off, but you can get very fast and acceptable outdoor lighting results with this.

Obviously put in a single stronger light for the sun with shadows turned on
