View Full Version : Lady Medusa's Den
LadyMedusa 12-21-2005, 05:09 PM Here I'll post doodles, sketches and work in proggresses.
I'll start off whit this one
Love
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/Love.jpg
just an easy doodle about a girl in love.
Inspired by an idea my brother gave me.
Here is an older work in the same style
Tie
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/Tie.jpg
It's supposed to be a zombie... or ghost wearing a tie.
it never got any backround, but I like this one, personally :)
Work in progress:
When cleaning up my skethes folders, I found an old sketch I made for the DSG that could be intresting if I worked more on it.
Flight: First Step: Reconstruction
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/c844ee76.jpg
A man and some pixies are going to be added. The Dragon will also get his wings back.
Old sketch :argh: (http://www.home.no/medusa/flight.jpg)
Heavy over-use of the softbrush X.X
Better do the man and the pixies all over.

wow, that eye looks great , the rest of the head too, the feathers might not hang down
if the creature's flying forward, though
odd looking creature, hehe

a little update :)
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/flight-Wip3.jpg
Blocked in the man and made one of the feathers.
it's a phoenix feather, My brother suggested that :)
I also put in some subtle veins at the ear that he suggested, but I'ts probably not visible here.
(The man will get hair and clothes, don't worry)

Crumbleman following crumbles in the fog. He got nicknamed Mr.Crumblefog as he acctuallty followed crumbles in the fog pretty much all the time.
Just a doodle to get rid of my layerwhoring.
3 layers max, that's a new record :)

Looking good Valentina! I really like this creatures design, it's coming along great!. I'd like to see some of the clours from the sky flected into the creature a little, some of the oranges, only ever so sightly.
Wonderful work :)

Mrs. Crumblelost
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/crumblelost.jpg
Wandering around in the fog, Mrs. Crumblelost spreads crumbles to not get lost.
Mysterious as it is, she seems to get lost anyway.
Again, just a doodle to get rid of my layer-whoring habit :)
(Might post a tutorial on this one later)
Thank you Rebecca :)

Ooooo I really like his new trousers! I maybe a Green shirt? I'm not great with colour hehe but thought maybe a dark green shirt would work well with the green eye, but then again now sure if the green would go with the purple? hehe sorry I'm rambling.
Or maybe a gold shirt? I like the colour as it is but not sure if it suits the character.
Great work! Keep it going :)

The nose and the forhead annoys me a little. Maybe I'll make a backround later

Very good fantasy storybook illustrations
Flying creature:
I liked the little red feathers in your first version they fit in better
The eye is beautiful but it’s the only glass- or wet like feature.
How about making some wet highlights on the wings?
Really love the Crumble man paintings

Thanks guys and gals :)
I'm going to make a few changes on her though, try fix that nose and such :)
Arty2- Yeah, the red ones looked more neutral and comfortable to look at, but they don't give me this Phoenix feel. Might try to make them more orangish though and fix the tip of it.
Will definitly try put wet highlight on the wings :D

Heya Lady M, :)
I always enjoy your work, and I love their whimsical quality. I think the new 'avatar' piece is really quite nice, and I can see you really pushing your skills further. One thing I would recommend is to work more from life or from Reference to get that added sense of believability to your work ~ you obviously have the painting skills, and just need I think to push your observational skills in terms of drawing people and animals. Do you have a local zoo? I know you're probably not one to like to look at confined animals, but it's good to go out and draw from real things every now and again. I need to do this more often myself. :D
Great to see your progress here, and definitely following your thread! :)
Cheers,
~Rebeccak

Thanks aggie and Gord :)
Rebecca: Thanks.
Nope, no zoos here. They do have some dead stuffed animals though, but I can't immagine that being the same. I live in the largest bird reservate in the area though :), so I'll definitly draw the birds that comes to visit my garden, allthough I know I should have more bipedal or 4 legged creatures to draw :/
A problem I got whit reference pictures is that I tend getting lost browsing pictures so I never start drawing ^^;; I'm trying to get rid of this "habit" though.
And that I exaggerate proportions based om what I'm thinking whitout knowing it at the moment I'm doing it... (that's what hapened to the austalian cranium in the anatomy thread for example) Also something I'm trying to get rid of. I should put on some music and think "what a nice song :)" instead of "what a large neck :S"

Lady M,
Though you're not a beginner, you may wish to check out some of the exercises we've been doing in the Beginner's Lounge. Many of the folks there have progressed out of what I would consider to be 'Beginners' and have become quite accomplished with their digital representational skills. Take a look, there's quite a lot of inspiring work there:
Beginners' Lounge (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=297229)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=297229
In particular, check out the exercises as posted in the first link. I think that doing Gesture drawings would take you far in terms of improving an overall sense of the figure. Given that you're already quite an accomplished painter, I think that having the underlying concepts of drawing the figure will only help both your figurative and character paintings. :)
Cheers,
~Rebeccak

Just felt the sudden urge to work a little more on this one :)
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/flight-Wip11.jpg
I remade the clouds, and i'm much more happy now :3
The feather has been softened a little so its more comfortable to look at, and looks more feathery.
Also worked on the dragons wing :). The muscle on the neck has been flattened a little as it was way too round to be realistic. I'll put some red in him/her once I'm finishe whit the skin :)
I also changed the color of the uniform top, and even if it is allmost the same color as the bottom, I don't think I'll change it that much.
--Edit--
allmost forgot this one
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/desert.jpg
Just a little experiment. Going to use only painter, and only the colors in the mixer, and its going to be somewhat futuristic.
(He's the soup delivery boy and he's out of "fuel". For some reason, soup has gotten insanely popular in the future...)
-
Rebecca- Thank you :). Will certanly try them out :)

I'm back from my vacation in Venice (Italy) so this will be a little bigger upload.
Grape Tree Leaf
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/grapeleaf.jpg
What's an italian farm whitout grapes? Spechally one that makes a really good vine :D
Grape leafs are thin and incrediply soft for a leaf.
Olive tree leaf and clover
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/Olive-kloer.jpg
Olive leafs are somewhat pointy. The older (yellow) leafs gets really hard to the tip can even *sting* you.
There were other 3-leafed clovers aswell. The ones near the bungalow I lived in were heart shaped. The ones on the road to the beatch were darker and cone shaped whit lighter markings. The ones in my garden are rounder, so I guess there must be quite a lot of different clover types
Rose Leaf
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/Roseleaf.jpg
I also got to study some rose leafs.
Fig Leaf
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/fig-leaf.jpg
I love Figs and I like theyr trees aswell. The leafs are incredibly matte. The plant also "bleeds" a milky white liquid when you rip off a leaf.
Nuts
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/hazelnuts.jpg
Hazel Nuts :)
Grandma's Ear
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/grannys-ears.jpg
Every year we go to italy to see our grandma. This is her left ear, drawn from 2 slightly different angles.
My Hand Drawing My Hand
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/hand.jpg
This is what happens when you can't think of anything to draw, but really whant to draw.
Head Collector: Base idea sketch
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/HeadCollector_intsktch.jpg
I sketched one of the ideas I got. (yes, I removed some scribblings bellow "Head collector")
By the way, those two other WIP's in my previous post are scrapped

Hey people, I just wanted to post up my second ever oil painting, and It turned out far better than I tough it would :)
Grumpy Alien Man.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/AlienBoy.jpg
He were supposed to be "Sad Alien Man", but he ended up being grumpy instead ^^;.
Oh, well, In a way I'm glad he turned grumpy acctually. I tendt to get this icky feeling when I see paintings of sad people, as if they got no home, no food, no medical aid and no safety. But then again, sadness is a wery challengy emotion to paint for me, so I see that as a land mark, or "level up point".
Maybe he's not grumpy, maybe he's nervous sick, because he got a date whit that beautiful, nice female that lives next door :D... Now millions of little stories pop into my mind:)
