I don't think I will be able to complete the "Living Toon" by the 4th. So I will post my toon here. If you have input please post your thoughts. I am looking to learn alot from this project.

I start by posting initial sketches and follow with the model.

Cool concept so far! I'm looking forward to seeing some unique ideas come through on this one...

So what's this living toon supposed to be about? No offense, but one character sketch doesn't spark my interest. Pitch the idea to the audience, make them WANT it badly, hype it up baby!!! Tell us about the epic struggle of the guy who wears glasses!

I am working on a concept for "Ryan the mad strafe jumper". Of course if you haven't played quake this would make no sense. I have included another conceptual sketch for the model. I will start to model next. Wish me luck.

Well I haven't been able to work on my toon as much as I have wanted but here is the progress anyway. Please give me some crits because those always seem to motivate me. I will be developing hair and teeth next.

Remi

Looks pretty good...if you could get the ear to look more like it's attached to the head that would be helpful..the nose looks a little blocky...maybe some work on the nostrils...the eyes could use a little tweeking just to give the eyelids a little more depth...other than that it's really starting to come along...keep it up....I almost sent my henchmen after you...you're lucky...more...more...more:thumbsup:

Oh...and I liked your lighting better in the pic where he has no nose...go back to that....

I will make the adjustments to the ears/eyes/nose today. Stay tuned for an update!!

Remi: First of all, thanks for the comments. I went and looked at your prom date for reference. I am having a hard time making the ear look attached to the head. Can you shoot a close up of your prom date or cowboy's ear/head connection to give me an idea?

Sandpiper

I agree with the nostrils and ear comments. Fix those fo' sho'. I'm glad to see the glasses are finally here! Now let's see those nosepads!:buttrock:

Looking much better...but...you asked for it....here goes..

The line on the top part of the ear> add that line of points there and weld the end points....then pull the added points out a bit

The circle on the ear> pull those out just a tad so the ear line there fades just slightly

The circle with arrow pointed at it> looks really busy there...can I see a closer look

the circle with the circle pointing at it> pull the top point out just a bit and down just a bit....the bottom one can go up just a bit

Post a closer shot of the mouth and chin please.....it looks like you have some unneeded tri that you can get rid of quite easily...I might be wrong

:thumbsup::shrug:

By shooting the shot of the mouth I think I have discovered a problem with the corner (like you mentioned). I have attached the "cage" image to see if you have any advice. Again thanks for all the input remi.

riltis
01-06-2003, 10:39 PM
By the way it is nice to meet you too Remi. I have to say it was a little crazy at work so I didn't get to post as much as I wanted...(like usual)..I made the adjustments you mentioned and added the top teeth. As usual, the more the comments the better!! So anyone feel free to add your two cents!!

Sandpiper
01-06-2003, 10:46 PM
I can see that the corner has been fixed! That's much better, after all it IS a toon mesh right? I like it the way it is...

Now let's see some hair!:wip:

Remi
01-06-2003, 10:46 PM
Making progress riltis...great job...here are some things that I saw you might want to fix...of course it's completely up to you...

1.Weld/Merge the point #1 to point #2...that'll get rid of a tri for you....You should still have very good control of the corner if not better if you do this...

2. the line I drew....you could weld/merge those points there in the direction of the arrow...not really needed but you'll get rid of a nasty try there too...

3.I don't know if that's a tri up on the nose but if it is you can weld/merge point #1 to point #2...

Great job...keep up the good work...you'll get faster and faster the more you practice..

I don't know what prog you're using but after you merge or weld depending on your preference you might have 2 point polys...you need to delete those..I use lightwave and by hitting 'w' it pulls up a poly info box with 2,3,4,>4 polys...I just select the 2pnt poly selection and delete them...

You'll get it i'm sure:thumbsup:

Well I have been very distracted with work the past couple of weeks so I haven't been able to update. But here is the most recent version of my toon. This is a learning process so please feel free to critique as much as you want. I made some minor changes to the mouth and nose. I have also added the sweet H-do on the cranium. :buttrock:

Let me know what you think.

Riltis....it looks great...good job man...i've been busy too...that's life...just glad to see you get done with an excellent model of a cartoony head that looks strangly alot like you...

Me likes the hair. Looks kinda shiny though. Maybe you should wash it :surprised

What's next? The body, eh? Get on it!!

t-toe
01-21-2003, 04:57 PM
yeah, that head turned out looking better than I had anticipated... i wonder why everyone whenever they draw/model, etc, have this natural tendency to 1) draw something that looks like themselves or 2) to always make them smiling. someone pointed those two things out to me about my art and after then (as you can tell by my little representative avatar), I finally started branching out into other emotions.

so, uhhh, I guess what I'm saying is, I'd love to see this guy maybe not quite so happy... hehe.

Looks alright for your style. The chin gives it much character. The ears are mediocre. Your concept art is very poor but I see potential.

Maybe one day you'll be good enough to work with canarta\\\

Sandpiper
01-31-2003, 12:25 PM
Concept art doesn't necessarily have to be totally realistic or jaw-dropping stuff. It just needs to convey some sort of idea through means of quicker media, like sketching as fast as you can, so you can model your project faster. Believe me, there is a LOT more shoddy stuff on this site as far as concept art, but some of the worst concept art (quality wise, not design wise) can still bring out some of the best designs in the end. :annoyed:

Mexus: As much as I love to get critique on my work, I have to make a comment on your message. This messege board exists because we are all trying to better ourselves as cg-artists. It doesn't exist just to bash peoples work. So as much as I appreciate your comments I would really appreciate suggestions on how to make my work better.

SandPiper: I am working on the body now. I have the legs almost completed!!..I will be updating soon.

He definitely got character. Looks like some sort of teacher or scientist. Give him an old english tweed-jacket or something.

Groovy !

Thank you for the props on my toon. This is my first attempt at modeling a humanoid subject and it has a long way to go. But it has truely been a learning experience. I guess with each polygon modeled I will get better.

I noticed on your website that you have some animation studies of "rigged" characters. Do you have any resources for where you learned how to rig. That is the next big step (after modeling) I will be learning. Thanks!!!

mexus
01-31-2003, 08:07 PM
Certainly this critique was directed for you.

I am sorry if I offended you. Some of the best artists and 3d designers on here don't receive comments on a personal level, but on a building level. It's a perception of CHALLANGE rather than BASHING.

I hope your passion and perception improves. The style of this character is unique.

riltis
01-31-2003, 09:04 PM
Mexus: You didn't hurt my feelings by offering critique. Your style of critique is not one that is well recieved because you don't offer anything further than your comment. Example: "your concept art is poor". Okay, cool...If you are a the critic tell me why...or offer suggestions. The reason we put this stuff up is to learn from our mistakes. So if you are such a CG-MASTER then offer up some of your brilliiant technique and know how to the discussion.

it sounds like riltis is perhaps a little defensive even though he says, "you didn't hurt my feelings..."

....but mexus, he makes a good point: critique without some helpful suggestions rarely is well received...

You would think that I haven't been working on my toon but actually, I have. This is my first attempt at creating a body for my toon head so it has taken me some time. As you can tell I lack some experience in shaping the human body. I am really looking for some hints on not only my model but the overall scale and proportion of the body. I will post 3 seperate images.

nice progress! im not to sure what is going on with his stomach though. is that his belly button. or is it an error in the ribs. either way i think raising the bottom of the ribs would help the look a lot. keep it going, good stuff!

briancole
02-17-2003, 01:08 PM
i know he's tooney and all, but the forearms may be a bit much.....he doesn't have huge upper arms, but i think you're going for more of a skinny look as opposed to popeye, so narrow those forearms a bit:thumbsup:

riltis
02-17-2003, 03:20 PM
Thanks for the posts!

darren_t: I have been using the symetry modifier in Max for the toon. I have had some strange things happening at the seams. I think I am going to remove it and just instance the body over.

Clown: Good point. I will make the adjustment. Keep the crits coming. I went to your N-portman head and the link was dead. Do you have any updates?

riltis
02-18-2003, 10:23 PM
Okay here is a final post without clothes. My next question. Does anybody have any good clothes tutorials for max. As always c&c is always welcome!!

briancole
02-19-2003, 11:42 AM
looking nice! chest looks much better....you could obviously go into further muscular detail, but since he's tooney it doesn't matter...not to mention he's your first [ahhh!]

I think I need to work on the neck . It doesn't seem to blend in with the body. I will post after lunch.

Hey this has come a long way since the last time i saw it. good work riltis:thumbsup: i like the job you've made of the head.

Can i ask why you decided to model the arms with the hands palms facing up. when you rig them and put them back into a neutral position you might have a problem with the mesh.

also the legs look a little short for the body.

keep up the good work:thumbsup:

eh
02-19-2003, 06:03 PM
Great job so far, there's just one thing that caught my eye. THe body seems half a head to long to me and the head kinda stretches out on the z axis while the body is flat on the x, I think it put too much contrast when that happens.
