View Full Version : A couple of simple questions about Modo
ruukki 12-20-2005, 08:48 PM Hi,
I'm a one-man studio, soon to dump some of my responsibilities to my dear and beloved. I'm thinking of getting Modo to run alongside Maya because of the budget. So:
- I really like Maya's easy alt-shift-mouse navigation. Does Modo have it, or is it possible to fix it if it's not default?
-do models go easily between Maya and Modo? Does anything else? Or is Modo just chiefly a modeling package, as the name suggests?
-is Modo stable? I won't have extra huge scenes but big enough. (Hardware will not be an issue.)
-I suppose Modo UI is also made easily customisable, like Maya's?
-anything else someone might tell me about differences between those two would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot, I'm sure I'll find the info bit by bit - but, as always, I'm out for a shortcut.

I'd give the fully working 30 day demo a go and see how it fits into your pipeline.

I think that would be the best way, plus you get 320MB worth of media files to help you out.
Cheers.

1) Yep, there's a setting that gives you that choice during installation. It can be changed later in the options as well
2) At the moment, Modo is just a modelling application, although 201 will have painting and rendering (amongst other things). Models do go between Modo and Maya via both OBJ and .MA file formats, although I believe there are some issues with the MA file support (never used it myself)
3) For me, Modo is quite stable, although I have had some crashes, but they occured when working with a high poly subD model. Other than that, I haven't had any stability problems, although I cannot get scripts to work on my iMac running OSX 10.3.9.
4) The GUI is extremely easy to configure, and there are limitless possibilities for a design of your own. 201 will add even more scope for customisation by adding Tabbed panels
As Phil suggested, it would be a good idea to download the demo and give it a go.

Thanks for the replies --- I'll download the demo. Just one more thing - can I import models from Modo in some older formats? I have an old 3DSViz, in which I make my simple expo stands for the simple customers. Is there a way to export? No big issue but it would be a bonus.

I don`t think that you can export/import 3DSViz files, but you van export fileformats such as .obj and .lwo
Its nice to have some more finnish modo users :)
