Render Farm Systems Analyst
(Render Farm Management)

San Diego, California

We are currently searching for a motivated and enthusiastic team player to join our Production Technical Services Department. The ideal candidate should be creative, experienced Senior Systems Administrator with a 3-D art-inclined background. The Render Farm Systems Analyst will act as an interface between 3-D artists, compositors, and editors as well as the systems administrators in IT. Knowledge of render software as well as familiarity with the basic technologies underlying the computing environment is required.

Responsibilities:
* Work with each team managing and maintaining the SCEA render farm. Ensure farm is 100% stable, keeping track of causes for slow speeds, holes, failing jobs.
* Work directly with artists to help resolve rendering challenges.
* Works directly with IT department to help ensure rendering environment is optimized for SCEA workflow.
* Collaborate with the rendering team as well as IT to develop internal tools, administrative interfaces and scripts.
* Manage render farm resources, including physical machines, disk space, software, and workload distribution. Proactive monitoring and maintenance of resources; find & debug system-wide problems before users notice.
* Research and evaluate (including in-house, application-specific testing) new technologies, software and products that may improve the render workflow.
* Monitors job queuing system; work to maximize frame distribution and efficiency.
* Act as liaison between artists and software/hardware vendors to resolve problems hindering a smooth workflow.

Required Skills:
* Three plus years experience in render farm administration required; five or more years experience preferred.
* Familiarity and comfort with Unix (Linux), Mac OS X, and Windows systems administration, especially for large (hundreds of servers and workstations) installations. Comfort with Linux installation and customization via kick-start and other netboot-style installations.
* Specific applications experience in Maya, Mental Ray, RenderMan, After Effects, Shake, Rush render queue.
* Ability to write new and debug existing scripts, including perl, C/Bourne shell, python, and/or MEL scripting.
* Knowledge of automated configuration management systems such as yum, cfengine, and cluster management tools.
* Knowledge of Ethernet, fibre channel, IP networking and protocols used internal to a LAN (NFS, SMB, X11, Windows authentication, NIS, Open Directory).
* Knowledge of shared file systems (NFS, cluster file systems such as Apple Xsan or IBRIX Fusion).
* Experience with troubleshooting of problematic data files, plug-in conflicts, and complex rendering issues.
* Knowledge of revision control systems (RCS, CVS, Subversion, Perforce, AlienBrain).
* Some queuing theory desired; specifically knowledge of how best to optimize diverse jobs and software for running on a distributed cluster of machines.
* Knowledge of security “Best Practices” for administering servers and workstations.
* Basic knowledge of C/C++ for debugging purposes; knowledge of Unix and Windows library and function call structure; enough to allow debugging of closed-source software using tools like strace and gdb to help pinpoint issues.
* Detail oriented; excellent problem-solving skills; balance time spent solving a problem with long-term quality of a solution.
* Excellent communication and organizational skills.
* Willingness to accept direction, work well under pressure, handle multiple tasks, and be flexible and open to changes.
* Ability to establish priorities, work independently or within a group, and proceed with objectives without supervision.
