View Full Version : join objects quickly?
JoelOtron 12-18-2005, 06:41 PM I have a huge heirachy of objects in which I need to apply a subtractive boolean to.
Usually I need to use several boolean objects set to "union" in order to generate a single object---which will then work with a boolean set to subtract mode.
I have ditools and thought Dijoiner would be a quick solution but its not joining objects on a point/polygon basis--which means my booleans dont work right.
Is there a quick way whether by plugin or script that can handle this? I dont neccasarily want the join to be destructive---I would prefer to be able to turn the joining on and off as needed.
Thanks!

Hi,
If I understand, you can use the free plugin OPTICONNECT BY MAJOUL

Thanks so much Ilanb for the link!
Looks like there are a few other nice things to check out there.
I should also note that DTools Dijoiner DOES work fine for what I needed to do. Upon further investigation, I discovered that some of my childeren objects were set to visible in editor, so even after the boolean operation they were visible, which had me thinking that diJoiner wasn't useable for booleans. it works fine.
I'll experiment with OptiConnect as well though.
Thanks again

Joel,
I maybe misunderstanding what you want to do, but the boolean operator will work with a hierarchy of objects, although it may take some time and memory to calculate and display the result - no need to join them first.
Just set up:
Boole (A subtract B)
Your hierachy of objects
Your object to subject (eg large cube etc)

Hi Mike
Yes, it would APPEAR that using a heiracrchy would work, but take another look.
What usually happens when there are more than 2 objects in a boolean, is that the boolean will give ou the inverse shape where 2 objects overlap.
I'll post an example if I get a moment.

Here is an example of correct boolean using several objects:

heres an example of what happens without nesting booleans set to "union".

Notice the inverted intersections.

Ah, yes - understood and useful to know. I don't tend to model in that sort of way - so I hadn't thought of intersecting objects.
