Cool
I have some critiques tough:
The eye doesn't look that realistic, needs some work.
The dof effect is to much exagerated because the body it pratically on the same plane that the head, probably if there was more prespective the effect would look cooler.

I agree the DOF effect has to go, or at least be a lot more subtle.
The eye looks fine to me considering how 'dead' sharks eyes appear in documentary footage. What would really bring this image to life, is to use a projector spot with a caustics map coupled with some enviromental effects to greate some shafts of light through the water, and caustic shadows / hilights on the shark itself.
Additional suggestions would be to lower your camera angle and to show the surface of the water from below. I think the shark would appear more ominous if the viewer were in shallow water looking up at the shark.
Nice mesh! I wish it were on my hard drive :)

great work....I would add some little particles floating in the water....

awesome model and texture. Maybe instead of DOF, use some heavy fog.

I like it but...
as mationed maek some light scatter thru the srface on the sharks back ad particles in water and some smoke to get that thick particle effect...checkout some tutorials on underwater scenes i think they could help you improve the image and i personally agree that the eyes nedd work..i think the specular highlight is to big, try making it sharper and finally what i consider the biggest problem the shark looks to stiff it needs a little felling of being dynamic just bend it so it looks like its swimming now it looks like hes about to tip over on his back and float to the surface at any second and maybe add som bubbles around tha tailfin that could allso make it seem more dynamic.
With a few improvments this could look really good.
Best regards
Peter

It'd look much better IMO if you had some caustics AND some sunrays penetrating the water. And yeah, I agree, lose the DOF.

Cooool! Almost looks like a painting! The caustics are great! The eye still looks weird, maybe up the glossiness a bit because the shine on the surface of the eye looks much too big  Huge improvement though!

I really like the first one... much more colourful! How about some foreground coral to the bottom left now? Or don't sharks swim that shallow? I'd've thought so though because the surface is just above him, isn't it?

hey Carl! the first one was supposed to be FINAL!!!!
The moderators are certainly going to change this to WIP forum...
I'm just kidding with you...tx for the crits and tips on changing my shark pic to make it better.
I don't have much time but I'll try to do some changes. Probably add some sand floor with caustics in it, and change the environment from open sea to shallow waters.
tx for the tips guys

Dasse!! muito bom Boda! Tás-lhe a dar!!!!
This one even looks more 2D than the first one u did. I just love that look. This would be a perfect work to display in a section called. Before CG Channel........ After CG Channel. I said I loved your first work, but this two last ones, are even better!! :-)))

Coooll (Muito Bom!!!)
I really prefer the water on the first of the last 3 pics, maybe because it's less saturated, I also agree with the eye, it really need's some touch.
It's a great pic though, it deserves to get into the newtek gallery!!!:bounce:

I think it looks kinda stiff...like it's just been placed there for some reason...you should bend him a bit, like he's actually moving...Like his tail, it should sway..sort of...

Some statistics for these pics:
Shark: 885 polys (without nurbs)
2 lights (above and below) + 1 for volumetrics
Radiosity off and caustics off
Render time with no AA: about 10 mins 1000x480

proton: tx proton, and yep, I'm very happy with the results, and it's all tx to you guys, and your tips.
spr0g: tx, man.
torbjorn: well, it does looks stiff, but it has to do with the camera angle, because on that frame it is really bended..it is swimming and that frame looks like it is straight, but no the upper view we can see the bending.

Great job on the reworks. I like the image just prior to you last submittion. I think the watter looks great and the caustics on the shark are very realistic. Kudos!

ok people, here goes probably the final pic on this thread. I tried to correct the eye, and added some bubbles...
Tx everybody for the crits and tips. Without your help this pic would a lot worse.
You all are responsible of at least 50% of the final result on this pic.

I'm sure I posted this reply already, but somehow it got deleted.
My only problem with the image is that there seems to be a "dead" spot in the lighting.
There is a long, dark stripe running alnong the length of his body, where the transition from side to bottom is. A little fill light would help I think.... unless he really does have a dark streek on his skin, in which case never mind!
otherwise, greate job, I love it!
-r
I agree. the dark transition between the bottom and top of the shark is a little drastic. Some cross-scene lighting would add some  to the scene. truly great work tho! great job.

scary!
:p
Just one thing: i guess the bubbles are too many and too big for bering some meters underwater (where do they come from?)
:applause:
scary man!!!
i like it
Zardoz
12-09-2002, 11:27 AM
Da Krunch: the bubbles are supposed to come from his tail (it's swimming)...probably they are too many. Tx for posting and for the crits.
recon, tex: yep you are right! but I wanted to keep this simple, with no radiosity or any kind of global illumination, so I only used 2 lights, one above and another below. That's why we have that dark stripe in the middle, but I can add another light just to break that. Tx for the tips.
And yes, somehow this thread got a cut...I already had 5 pages...:annoyed: but hey, sh*t happens!
Tx everyone.

if you make them really small and then getting larger flowing BACK from the shark it might look better, and bubbles seem to usualy have more clairty so try that too...

Damn!!! These two are great!!!! Love it!!!! Just a small suggestion. the bubbles are to visible in the second one. try to give them more transparancy, so that the attention is focused on the shark... and not on the bubbles. :p
Great job Doz!
CarlCampbell
01-08-2003, 02:27 PM
He-hey! I remember this!
I think the bubbles look good. Its not always the rule to have to focus on the main subject so no problem, but I think adding some small fizz (little bubbles) around the tail would do him justice.

Your Model is very good. But I grew up on the Texas Coast catching sharks as a kid, A Black TIp Shark does not have those wiskers like in the front of the head if you are going for realism. Just thought I would throught that at you.

Blackassheep: A Black TIp Shark does not have those wiskers like in the front of the head if you are going for realism.
tx for noting that.
I really did the 'wiskers' (nasal flaps) a 'little' bit larger than usual but some of the models I used really had those things with a reasonable size. See the pic for a reference.

Great work as we are getting used too, wich will make things harder for the next try.
All look great in the final pics, pity we don't see the teeth and a short movie, just to see it swim...

Would you mind if I set this image as my background? I'm a big wildlife fan and find your picture relaxing, much like a shark or fish in the water (when not hunting, mind you).
I hope you'll say yes.

Very nice work. The caustics you added are fantastic! I like the first one of the "exposure test" best.
About the shark model, I agree that the "whiskers" are oversized. I don't think this particular shark has whiskers at all, really. The shark with the big whiskers in your reference photo is a "nurse-shark" and is normally found on the seafloor looking for crabs and stuff. Reef sharks (black tips, white tips, spear sharks...) hunt for fish, rather than animals in the sand, and don't need whiskers. Also the nose is too 'stretched' and tapered. Of the last two pictures the second one is the best by far, as it's hiding these thing.
Don't take my critisism too harsh, please :) I really like your work a lot, and the shark is nice. I'm just trying to be constructive and add some points of interest to this reply ;) I could've answered with just: ""! :)

Skyraider3D: tx for taking the time to write on my thread.
second, I could never take your criticism harshly (can I say this? god why can't we all use the same language? like portuguese? ;) ) because that's what this site is about. And specially when it comes from someone who seems to know what he's talking about! And also, when it comes from someone whose work I've been following from some time now...like 2 years!! I've been on your site for the first time a long time ago. I'm a big ww2 planes fan. check some of my renders of a F4U with 2 years now...
Very small gallery (http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0235892501/corsair/index.htm)

Ey Zardoz! I'm glad you like my work :)
I checked the gallery, the Corsair looks familiar. Have I seen it at The3DStudio.com? ;)
And the sideview of the shark is really nice, just the topview needs some width adjusting (slimmer in the middle, wider at the nose). Perhaps you could use an FFD thingy for that?
I checked the links in your signature... wow, great work! Beast of burden is very impressive! Rendered in Brazil? Have a go at my brand-new E-Light MAXScript (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37508) , I think you'll like it! :)

erhm, skyrider...it's all lightwave...I want to learn max, but for now it's lightwave.
And what you said about the shark (kind of fat) it's correct...I'm at a scentific ilustration course and my professor said the same thing. But he was impressed with what I did in so little time (he doesn't know 3D very well...it's all china ink and scratch board...)
Skyraider3D
01-16-2003, 03:25 AM
ARGH :surprised My bad! OK, Lightwave it is! :)
The blobby 'grain' on the beast render so reminded me of early betas of Brazil... hence the confusion.
*Makes mental note to READ better*
I guess I've been spending too much time behind the monitor today... :hmm:
By the way, from what I've seen Lightwave does amazing things. Don't bother with MAX, I'd say. Since you like WW2 aircraft, have a look here. You'll LOVE it!

Download the movie "1945" and be thoroughly amazed. All made in Lightwave by this Japanese guy with a gift :)
ENJOY!
PS. It's bedtime in Portugal too, you know ;)
