View Full Version : Compositing on Super 8
JoshKirk 12-18-2005, 12:33 AM I am thinking about shooting a movie with a few VFX shots. Here is my problem though, I would like to shoot it in super 8. Im torn because part of me thinks it will be easier because super 8 is low res, but another part thinks it would be alot harder to track, match grain, scratches, and film jitter. Would you guys say I should do it or scrap the idea and shoot on a dvx100a? My shots will include an exploding building in the distance, a shot of a bridge in which I add cars, and maybe some other not so intensive shots. Thanks in advance.
Has anyone ever worked with super 8 before? Compositing with it that is?

I have been thinking about same thing too. Is here anyone who have tried this?
Does anyone have some digitized super8 footage availabe? Would be interesting to do some tests with it.
But i think it's going to be hard. When I look at my dad's old super8 rolls, I see a lot of heavy grain, a really visible hotspot and the colors seem to be shifted a little bit to red.
So, it might be easier to shoot the VFX backplates on DV, give them this super 8 look in the post and then mix it up with the other super 8 shots.
But if anyone has experience with super8 and compositing: I would really love to hear from you!!!

I'm thinking you would probably want to shoot the live action once with super 8 (to analyze) and again with something cleaner (to actually use). Then grade your clean and composited shots to look like the super 8. I just can't see you getting a good matte pulled from a bluescreen, good tracking data from from a scene with such weave and artifacts, and a lockable stable shot to comp into with all that noise. Shoot a few super 8 wedges of 50% gray to pull grain and artifacts from and maybe also a real heavy duty tracking marker close up to get accurate film weave data.
