View Full Version : CS rigging, is it better to have legs far apart?
Hey all,
I'm once again trying to rig my character for the classic challenge but i'm having problems as the envelopes from the baggy pants catch on each other.
Would it be better if i moved the legs apart from each other and set the envelopes then?
Should i make the inside and outside envelopes much smaller and closer to each other?
i tried the tut that comes with CS but i'm not having much happiness with my character.
Having big trouble here, please help.

As with any character rigging, it's best to pose the character in their natural state: ie. Legs shoulder width apart, arms hanging down (but on an angle).
Baggy pants can be a pain, but if you reduce the outer envelopes at the top and tweak the vertices closer to the crotch, you should be fine.
Thanx Erilaz, i have been doing that but i'll be damned if i can get it right.
I'll playmore later.
Thanx.

With Physique it's actually very easy to exclude verts from links, so it's not so important to keep the limbs apart and away from the torso. I model in whichever position is more likely to give me the desired deformations (taking into account what range of motion the character will actually need), and I worry about overlapping envelopes later.
Hey Iain,
Thanx for the reply i think that i was really looking for that exclude verts from links feature.
Would you be able to tell me under what section i would find that in the help file please.
Thank you very much.

Go into Physique's Vertex SO mode, select all the verts on one leg, hightlight "Remove From Link", and click on all the links on the other leg, then reverse the process for the second leg.
I don't have Max in front of me just now so that's from memory, but I'm fairly sure it's right.
Iain, you are truly da man.
Thank you very much, i'm sure i will get it right tonight. Can't wait to try it, but got to finish work first.
I'll let you know.
