try to start with rectangle shape and then convert it to editable poly.I use editpoly 2 free plugin / maxplugins.de /, is very helpfull to extrude the border edges.

this is my way, hope this help

I have found with editable poly that you don't always do it counterclockwise though it usually triggers an error message saying illegal new face if you do it the wrong way. When you think you have created the new poly check in your undo history that it says it has done it because it sounds like you haven't completed the action properly. :)

If you guys get CSpolytools(goes along with meshtools), you could just select all the points at once and hit a create poly button. I usually just create a plane make it 1 seg by 1 seg, and convert it to editable poly. Then I just select edges and shift/drag them.:D

Can you elaborate on that? They should get along famously, as long as you're running Max 4.2 (csPolyTools uses functions not available in pre-4.2 releases).

My polytools work just fine too, 4.2 as well.
