View Full Version : First time using Modo
AlexC 12-17-2005, 11:56 AM Hey,
I am currently trying out Modo 103 Trial, and so far I'm rally liking it, espically the GUI. Buy there are a few things I don't like.
- The way you move around viewports is werid, espically with rotate. When you move the mouse Up, the viewport goes Left. When you move it Right the viewport goes Down, which is really kind of annoying.
- The transform bar I think should be horizontal along the top, as in 3DS Max.
- I can't drag select vertixes, edges, polys. I have to control Click them, which is a pain.
- There's no Plane as an object, I use the Plane a lot in 3DSMax, yet there's not one in Modo :(
- I can't select whole objects either, so if I make to Primatives on the same layer I have to delete the entire layer to get rid of one object!
- No renderer? I can't find it anywhere, is that because it's a trial?
Maybe some of these things will change in Modo 201 - but there's no trial for that yet so i'll have to wait :P
But overall I am pleased with it, I can't belive how quickly it starts up compared to Max and Maya!

* Use a 3 button mouse and the Alt key to rotate, pan, zoom, in the system/ preferences remapping select Maya or try the other ones and see which feels better
- The transform bar I think should be horizontal along the top, as in 3DS Max.
System /Form editor find form click on the transform text. The form corresponding to that menu will be highlighted click arrow to expand find transform. Highlight right click and duplicate.
Use the find form option click on the top bar on the blank area next to work plane.
Modo modes will be highlighted expand and you will see all the top bars options.
drag the copy of the transform tools to the modo modes menu and place it under work plane, and you will have it on top all the time. Or you can just use the w,e,r keys
- I can't drag select vertixes, edges, polys. I have to control Click them, which is a pain.
left mouseclick brings out a rectangle selector, middle mouse also, right mouse button selects individual subobject components verts edges polys use space bar to switch between them. Shift to add to selection, or Ctrl to remove from selection when using the right mouse button
- There's no Plane as an object, I use the Plane a lot in 3DSMax, yet there's not one in Modo :(
use the box tool
- I can't select whole objects either, so if I make to Primatives on the same layer I have to delete the entire layer to get rid of one object!
double click on the object you want to selectl, and it will highlight all when your in poly mode.
- No renderer? I can't find it anywhere, is that because it's a trial?
No renderer in 103, renderer is slated for version 201, which isnt out yet, but you can see videos of the upcoming tools on Lux sight.

Hey Nando,
Thanks for clearning them up. You said left mouseclick brings out a rectangle selector, middle mouse also, right mouse button selects individual subobject components verts edges polys use space bar to switch between them.
I just tried this and it is very hit and miss as to when it actually works. Sometimes it will do it, other it wont. I am using a 3 buttoned mouse (Left, Middle Scroll click, Right).
I thought Modo's GUI was customizable enough, but now you said that I can create it how I want!
For having no Renderer, is it possible to Export to 3DS and then Render it in Vray?

the mouse options if you mean hit or miss in selections?
Sometimes if working in Modo meshsmooth its hard to select subobjects. So what i do is turn on the cage. Right click the tab next to perspective it probably sez shaded, or textured.
scroll visibility options turn on show cages.
selecting the cage will highlight the subobject components you realy want ;)
as for rendeer.. I would export Obj to keep the topology as close as whats in Modo. then import to Max 7 or 8, and convert to editable poly or mesh. you might have to adjust the scale to a higher value in the import options. theres a thread on this forum somewhere that i think states the optimal scale value when inporting into max. If using older max version then you can find the free obj importer at scriptspot.com I think.

About the rotating. You may want to see if "trackball rotation" is on. In the upper left of the view port are two capsule buttons. Under the second button (right) there is an option near the bottom to turn trackball rotation on and off.

Ah cool thanks Jscott. Also one thing I notice that is missing, or just the fact I can't find it, is that there are no modifers, is that right? I'm making an alarm clock that I made in Max but never finished, and it's symatrical - is there a Symatry modifer?

nope no Symatry modifer or a stack. There are tools that do what is on the modifiers list, but when you use them it would be the equivelent of collapsing the stack, so you are left with geometry only. There is the mirror tool under duplicate. set the tool selection to origin thats the tab bewteen materials, and Symmetry then use the mirror tool. The symmetry option located on top adjust Geometry that you adjust on the X, Y,or Z.
