Title: Hard Boiled To The Max
Name: Hoang Nguyen
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop

I was going through my comic collections and came across some really old comics. It brought back allot of happy memories, of childhood. There just something magical about holding it in your hand. The cheap newsprint and that musty smell.

I thought it would be neat to create a mock-up comic. I always love those old pulp magazines; and wanted to create something old and something new. Sort of my take on it. I didn't follow any guideline, just took some liberty.

Anyway, I started this a while back, right after the "Master & Servant" challenge. I've been working on and off for the past few months. It took me roughly about 60 hours to finished the painting. I had fun designing her jacket and coming up with those silly titles. The painting and all the texts were created in photoshop 7

Let me know what you guys think, comments are welcome.

Jeez, really impressive work on the gun! Is that a texture, or did you do the rendering via lots and lots of individual strokes? Or maybe both? Either way, this is totally badass. The magazine looks really cool too - battered and used. This image is completely to my liking!

Here is the painting before I added the wear-and-tear book:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/hqnguyen/hardboiled_poster.jpg
Thanks to everyone for your feedback and kind words :)
Monk2 : I did paint the gun from scratch, and added a metal texture to help pop it out a bit.
Blakjak: Please take it with a grain of salt, I'm working on a WW1, action adventure comic book and it does them in there. I hope to one day be able to finish it.

Hi,

Like everyone is used to say your drawing style and your technical knowledge are impressive.
I have to say that it's also motivating for the small drawer like me; Drawer like you show us that everything is possible, so thank you.

If you have enough time I would have know what kind of brush do you use to give this kind of render on your character.

ONE MORE TIME Thank you, and sorry for my english.

Ciao

This is really awesome illustration, the colors the textures, oh man the textures are beautiful. I love the way you paint it has a old chinese calligraphy/painting feel to it. The only thing that bothers me is the way she's holding the gun. i would have fully extened her arm, it looks kind of funny to me. But over all really nice piece man. Keep it up.

wow!, I'm speechless. Front page plug! Many thanks to the staff at CGTalks. And thanks to all for your feedbacks and compliments.

sh@ke (sh@ke); Agree, I should have done that, the way she's holding it, she might get a black eye when she start to shoots :) Good call, I'll have to revisit this one.

ehsan d; Thank you

Jugeras; Thanks

Mex; Thanks, I usually hand paint the whole image first and then added textures to help enhanced and weathered the image. I'm glad you liked it :)

B3liar; Thank you, I hope I didn't offend you or anyone else for that matter. It was not my intention to glorified or bringing attention to them, rather it was a design and artistic call. I'm working on a comic book that feature them as the main villian and she is one of many assassins in the book. I do appreciated your feedback, thanks.

Gainanix; Thanks you

Rolos; Thank you, believe it or not, I don't really have any hand made brushes. I used the standard one that came with Photoshop 7 I used the number 3 or 5 pixels brush for details and the 300 pixels on for covering large area. No wonder its taking me so long to paint, I need to start experimenting with some customize brushes. Any body have any to share? :)

Aridiel; Thank you

Kid Mesh; Thank you

HellBoy; Thanks, I still struggle with the prespective to this day, but I won't give up on it. I still think that you can achieved a much more dramatic result if you go for foreshortening.

Elsie; Thank you

JMcWilliams; thanks for your understanding, my goal was not to tried to glorified them, but it was just part of the design.

mindrot; Thank you

arielmedel; Yeah, it's pretty crappy! I haven't updated for over 2 years now, I have allot of stuff that I can't really show. Since its related to work, but here it is: www.liquidbrush.com (http://www.liquidbrush.com/)

e338; Thank you

Spc; Thank you

Darktwin; You are right about the hand, I'm not too happy with how the forearm came out. I should have extended the arm. I'll have to come back to this piece again, just a bit burn out, but thank you for your critique. Good eyes :)

Djampa; Thank you and your welcome, I had allot of fun working on that tutorial. Hope it give you some insight into how I approached my work. More to come, I usually work on 3 or 4 paintings at any one time, since my attention spand is pretty short.

LATROMMI_SUINEG; cam on, Thank you!

roqsteady; Thank you, I love to do foreshortening, but its a daily struggle for me. I was please with how this piece turn out, but there are still flaws. Especially how she hold the gun.

Sulla; Thank you, glad I could obliged.

jais; Thank you

InesD; Thank you, I'm always partial to old things, they have allot of souls to them. New building, houses, etc... seems so stale to me.

i love this work. fantastic in every way, pose is very cool i like the way she is holding the gun, sort of unusual and compact yet quite natural. Also love the expression on her fave sad and dark, composition, execution, details all beautiful. the nazis were evil but there imperialistic styling has a dark grandeur, they themselves drew the styling from older sources, combined with cute petite girl nice contrast. cool work

anyhow, great piece

I love the concept. I am a big comic book fan and I know exactly what you mean about pulling out those old books. Excellent execution of your idea. The main character has a really nice expression on her face... one of contempt and anger. The aged effect of the cover is also really well done and very convinving. Fantastic work!

This is really impressive in so many ways. This blows away a lot of the currently published comic art that's out there right now.
Just out of curiosity, Hoang, there was a comic book artist with the same name
as you, whom I haven't seen art from in years, that isn't by chance you is it?
Also, sorry with the questions, but I think you touched on this with one of your replies, but is this going to be part of a published work?

Thanks,

Marc

DarkSkills; Thanks dude

prophecy313; Thanks, that was just what I was going for, glad you liked it :)

Headley; Nope, the whole image was created from scratch; the only exception was the worn out edge of the book. I scan in a bunch of my old books and did a paint over, then I composited the artwork on top. Thanks for your feedback.

raghu g; Thanks

brilopad; She not really aiming down the sight of the gun; I was going for a more threatening look. Like she was really sad and pissed off that she had to take out someone. Thanks for your comments.

sestan; Thanks, just what I was hoping to achieved. :)

AirbORn; Thanks, stay in art school, ha ha... those were the best time of my life :)

roqsteady; Ha, ha... I love to reply to everyone posts, especially yours :)

chanchan222; Thanks, I used the pencil sketch and used it as a multiplyer in PS. I also added a second layer (the same pencil sketch) at 50% opacity to get a better contrast. Years ago I would inked all my pencil work, now I'm just too lazy. :)

hellgatemedia; Ha, ha... I actually have a fan :) Unless there was another artist, I'm the same guy that used to do comic a long time ago. You can see some of the old stuff here: http://liquidbrush.com/comics.htm

This is going to be a cover for a comic book that I'm working on, I'm not sure when I'll be able to get it done though. I got so many projects and I get bored so easily :)
Thanks for your feedback and ask me question anytime.

Oh my God, it is you!!!
I saw the name, and than the face of that character, it was a little different than what I was used to, but I knew it had to be you. There is a certain something about your art that no one else has.
Actually, I'm a huge fan, HUGE fan, I have every comic you illustrated. I absolutely loved your work on Punisher.
As I am sitting here writing this, I am at my desk, and above it on my wall in frames are several original pages of comic book art, including one of your pages of Alien Legion.
I collect art, and I always wanted to have something of yours.
All the sudden, you just kinda vanished, and I never understood why, but obviously you've gone and found success in the video game industry.
Now I'm really glad I came on these CGtalk boards....

Nice!! I'm a 2D artist myself & I really dig this. I like the character's style and the execution of the whole piece - good concept with the pulp book cover. However, I feel a little more of the right forearm should of been visible & a bit longer with the foreshortening. Great piece over all!

Too many doodads on the gun. Does she really need a telescopic sight, a ringsight that's made irrelevant by the scope, AND a xenon flashlamp?

Are those two clips junglestrapped? What kind of internal feed mechanism would allow simultaneous or selective feed from two clips that aren't in line with the barrel?

On the other hand, the gun really does have a sort of 4th-reich look to it; it looks quite a bit like a luger. The girl's face is AMAZING and stylistically it's awesome.
