View Full Version : Poster Project of a Woman with some serpentine pose thingy

So I have a project idea for myself with two big goals:



Make a poster that I want to hang on the wall that can "compete" with my really very cool Mucha print.
Make a poster image that I can potentially sell, because I want to do that sort of thing as a career in the future.
Now, I'm an amateur. So my initial sketches are going to be very sketchy.

Edit: Here's the latest go-around, after a bunch of rework. Overall, the figure looks really wonky to me. I like where the composition is heading (I learned about iconic composition thanks to the post by Philip Straub); but it feels like I may need to put this away for a bit to freshen up the approach.

Here's the first concept. It's a "woman in a serpentine pose". (Hey, it worked for Mucha.) Any and all comments and criticisms are appreciated.

Here's the second concept. I changed the position of the model and refined the tendril thingys a bit (they now look like they're coming out of her bum). This design seems a lot stronger to me, not sure how I can strengthen it further. Time to make the tendril thingys "fancy".

Competing with Mucha eh? Now THAT'S not a tall order. ;)

Your second try at a composition is much better than the first or third. Gives more depth and doesn't cause so many weird tensions with the little spikey things nearly touching her. (and doesn't cut her foot off - that really looks bad to have her foot cut off in what looks like so accidental a way) That said, there are still funny tensions being caused by the flame-like shapes that don't have enough breathing room at the edges of the frame. They should either have more room there or be cut off by the edges in order to look purposeful. That's all the way around the shape I'm talking about. The bottom feels cramped too.

The flame shape on the left, you need to have that overlap her body so that you don't lose that sense of depth. It's flattening out right now because it *just* kisses her thigh while the placement of her foot is telling us that part's in front of her.

The weight of the pose on the second one, isnt' quite there. She'd fall over the way you have her there. Her back foot should be moved to the right (our right) more.

I think you have a good start. :)
