:D Hi, I have been a member of this site for ages, but so far this is my first artwork post. I hope you like my stuff :)

I just got my first wacom well its not a wacom its a Tevion tablet, very cheap but does the job nicely :)
Its not my first time using graphic tablets or Photoshop mind you I am a graduate of the National film school of Ireland (Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology)
I graduated from Animation. But we covered most aspects of Film and Digital and traditional Art forms.
Lets see This IS MY FRIST Photoshop painting :) never did one before donít know why.
Iím finding it very free and easy to use as normally paint with oils and the like. Which can be unforgiving at times, Painting for art shows and galleryís and 3Dmax stuff is what I have been doing a lot of since I left college.

OK the painting,
What I trying to achieve is a warm, tender, and realistic-ish painting of a woman by a window. so the main thing for me is to recreate soft light in warm tones and try to portray a calm relaxed feeling, Iím going to try to capture defused light on skin and hair covering her face I donít want the subject looking at me as I want to keep some antimony and a sense of her looking trough the window, some thing like my favorite Life Drawing poses witch are sitting and 3/4 of front on but with a twist of the body.
Ok now that you read all that here are the stages of my painting, Please crit and help me out if you can,
Thanks again, Hope you Enjoy
Liam

1. eyes and concept
2. Cleaned Line Image with antimony fixed
3. Simple colors done this to get a feeling how I wanted the Hair.
4. Is background Iím happy with this background for the moment light washed window and warm indoors made using a simple Gradient tool thingy :)

is Me just finding the color pallet I like these colors J
just trying to workout the locations of the humps and bumps so to speak LOL its just a rough idea where I think bones and mussels should be under her skin
Light of more correct shadow just finding depth to her contours in respect to the light source.
Just smoothing it all out trying to find a skin texture now humm? Not sure about this though. I know the color tones are wrong but I fear so are some of the antimony under her skin, maybe?

Ok I redone the light study of her skin warmed it up somewhat and fixed lots of little bits. Happy enough
here she is with the background and a few changes and slight improvements
Ok got rid of the outline and added detail and still playing around with shades and tones a bit. The hands are now detailed showing veins. Just like mine lol :D.
Ok NOW she has hair this took the best part of ĺ of an hour its lots of layers and single strands. Based on the first hair look I put feeder lines and kind of put clumps around (if that makes sense) them then light it with diff shades in places where the light would catch the hair, I want a loose untidy look I like how it turned out. Some face detail but this will have to be much more refined later.
Ok some more face detail not too happy something bugging me its prob. to do with the tilt of the head. Some body fixes in there too.

Finding the right shades of light for the face and shadows for the hair. Some more body fixes around the hands and legs.
Ok done the net curtain in the window used clone, liquid-tool and other stuff to get it I like it, nice warm and soft looking. Going to paint a proper chair for her some thing quite plush I think :D
Settled on this scheme for the chair I think it suits the tone of the picture.
Ok now the chair is detailed and lit very grand stool ! she has now poor girl need a proper seat lol J gave it a rich gold-ish look to suit the feel of the picture.

I do like the values in the upholstery of the chair a lot.

youre not the first who had the amazing "idea" to copy a porn photo.

And what xeNusion was trying to say here, or would have probably elaborated on given more time is:

While your values, proportions and the lighting are showing a nice progress (give more thought to the composition: maybe it is too centered?) you could have chosen a more original subject.

But I figure for a WIP which you use to learn things it is just fine.

Ok this painting is NOT a copy of some porn site
it is not pornographic, nor is it meant to be anything other than a life drawing study,
it is actual based on a life drawing model!!!
Itís an original work. And I have taking some offence by xeNusion comments.
The subject is simple because this is my first PS painting and I just wanted to see how it would turn out.

I don't feel it's pornographic, but I don't find it very compelling. I suppose if I was a man, I might just enjoy seeing the nude woman, but frankly, I think it needs more. Once you get past the "ooh ahh" factor of looking at nice boobies, it's sort of blah. In fact, since you said it's based on a life drawing model, that's what it looks like. Just a life drawing model doing a typical studio pose, more or less acting as a lifeless lump. Her pose isn't very interesting and the lack of other pictorial elements that might give us more context for the model is adding to the overall blahness.

You've got a nice start on value/modeling here but you could do more with it, I'm sure. :)
Oh, and one thing - her hair's looking sort of "crunchy". Don't draw every single strand. It's undermining the realism of the rest of the rendering.

Photoshop is nice still like to figure more out when it comes to brush and paint technical approach but Iím getting to grips very fast J THANKS

I like it.

No, it's not pornographic nor is it a copy of a pornographic material. I have no idea why someone would even write such drivel as that. Even if it was drawn from a photo, the original photo wasn't "porn". Give me a break. Do you consider it porn because the woman in the painting is good looking or sexy? Wow, then I suppose there is a ton of art out there hanging on walls that's porn.

Ignore xeNusion. He contributed nothing and I think your first foray into digital painting has an excellent start! Keep it up. You may also want to check out the figure study threads like this one:

Lman- Great work. Its a shame some posters want to tear it with harsh critisism, but I guess everyones got the right to their opinion. I appreciate you showing the steps that went into the process of making this. Can you recommend any books that taught you how to use color and lighting in art? Despite all the digital painting tutorials and art books Ive read through, Im still stumped as to how people know how to layer color tones for proper lighting effects.
