Um... where have you been looking? Max has had SubD's since at least version 3.

Maybe you should read the user manual sometime.:hmm:

The only thing I want from santa is FAST VIEWPORT SPEED!!! I reapeat.... FAST viewport speed..... like XSI fast. Now damnit. That's all I need.

Yes we need a MAX that can handle over 1 million polys. How does blizzard do those films?

Yessss.... fast viewport speed would be nice.
I would say Blizzard has good hardware. Damn good hardware.

He Queen diana, most of the time it's not the software that sucks, but the one who uses it. From the remarks you make, it's obvious that you don't know the least thing about 3dsmax. So stop bitching and go play with your Maya/XSI. (Is your daddy rich or does the word "WAREZ" ring any bells?)

That' the first time I saw someone saying maya renderer is better than max one....

Then this'll be the second time:

Max's default scanline renderer is pretty damn bad. Which is why there's a good market for plugin renderers I guess.

Actually the scanline renderer is pretty good I think.

My demoreel, made with Max4/scanline renderer:

Scanline all the way baby!

umm... Brazil? (or vRay, Mantal Ray, Final Render.... shall I continue?) ;)

Nathan were talking about the default renderers

Don't worry, visualBoo, I'm still a nice person. It just that these kind of topics pisses me off. I'm sorry, won't be so harsh next time.

where have you been?

Martijn Wijmer: I thought someone posted something and then deleted it after you replyed :)

Nathan: Negative... does not compute. I must have missed something. I thought you were comparing Mental Ray to max's scanline. Cheers anyway man

[edit] and besides... how did this thread turn into a comparison? "wish list" is a key word here :)

exactly, in case you hadn't heard, Maya comes with Mental Ray...

so... when BADBOY says "Look at XSI and Maya, best renderers in box" I assume he must be talking about Mental Ray. and I would have to agree with him and say that I think Mental Ray is just a TAD better than MAX's scanline renderer.

OK I piped in my only wish. I'm out fella's

Any package can subdivide polygons, and that's what most do. SubD Surfaces is specifically a rendering issue. The renderer has to support them (they are not polygons). PRman and now MRay support them. Out of the box, I think Maya is the only commercial package that supports them in their renderer, though it must have cost them a LOT in patent royalties to Pixar.

Kosta...uhm, Puffy,

I have bad news for you - from the above list it looks like you picked the wrong package! You got an expensive 3D application without any rendering, no subdivisions whatsoever (there are only 4 algorithms inside, and only one of them comes from mental images),and you obviously need NURBS to make up for them...

It does not need a wizards to tell that 3ds max is not going to satisfy your needs. :(
Please complain to whoever decided to buy max for your studio. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for discreet to add a fifth subdivision method to max 6 and yet another renderer...

one thing I can't understand is why discreet waste times developing the render in max5. scanline was ever usefull in many case, and there is enoug renderer on the market (and sooo better than max5 one) to satisfy other case. max5 renderer will never be at least as good as fR or brazil...

Discreet have now to do a big bang for max6, or this will be the last 3dsmax version... :buttrock: Or maybe drastically decrease the price to align themselves on maya and lightwave.

Anyway, please stop complaining, or do it with discreet. You think max sux ? right, go on maya. such war go no where.

my 2cent

Funnily, the poster of this thread is the same that started this one: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29070

So I dunno what he's babbling about... maybe a few years of forum devoicing is in order...
