I have a 2.8ghz P4, 1.5 gigs of RAM 800mhz fsb and a SATA drive. I'm also planning on getting a Quadro FX 1000 or 3000...

Is this enough power to work in 1080i? If not, is it enough power for 720p?

all opinions or experiences, much appreciated...

We do a lot of work on 1080i/p work on shake on the mac but we are using Uber systems and the performance on local footage is fine.Your setup will enable you to work on any res but perfromance will be far from optimal.

I deally you would want a dual proc machine with faster drives, preferably striped raid for performance and definately the more ram ( your OS supports a lot more than that, and its sooo cheap ! )

If you want the cheapest way to get the most out of that setup buy a sata raid card and another drive run raid0 and throw another 1.5gb of ram in your machine.

That said. Depending on the type of comps you are doing it may not be such an issue. Inteligent workflows and maybe even taking advantage of the proxy system will greatly improve perfomance !
