View Full Version : Maya & XP (RAM)
Hi
I noticed that when I use Maya it doesn't use all off the actual ram that I have in my computer. Even when I render and Maya is pushed to the limits. I use XP and I have 1280mb ram. XP use 320mb and when Maya is rendering a total of 500+ mb ram is in use. How do I configure my computer to make use of all the available ram. Is it a Maya or XP issue.
Any ideas will be useful.

why are you worried ? maya use as much as she needs ... why do you wanna force her to use all your RAM ?
btw even if she takes all your RAM won`t render faster :)

Yeah. RAM isn't like CPU usage (where if your computer is working as fast as possible, it will be at 100%). The amount of RAM used depends on how much stuff is in your scene, how large your renders are, etc.
The amount of RAM you have is just a limit that you can't exceed, and as long as you have more than you are using at any given time, you are OK. Since you've got much more than you apparently need, you can just leave more programs running.
You are probably right, It's just when I render and maya gets pushed to its limit suddenly the render view goes white and every thing stops until it has finished rendering. it happens only with big files, I thought maybe there is a solution to this problem.

There is a solution to that problem, but it doesn't have anything to do with RAM. IIRC, all you need to do to fix that problem is turn of XP "look." Switch to classic mode. If that's not the solution, then the problem is listed in the known issues with XP and there is no workarounds (a little too busy to find out which is the case right now.) It's in the A|W knowledge base.

Switching to the classic look doesn't fix it (it's a general XP issue), but it is just a cosmetic glitch. Basically, Maya doesn't use a seperate thread for rendering, so while it's processing the image, it doesn't bother to update the UI, and the app seems to freeze. Under Windows 2000, it worked the same way, but the UI didn't blank out.

This has nothing to do with your RAM it probably has to do with Windows' messaging system. There's a "paint" command that supposed to redraw the window but because Maya is busy rendering it doesn't respond to the paint message. I don't know if switching to classic look will help because I don't use XP, but it might, because the GDI may have changed for XP's new interface. If you want to see Maya use all your RAM, use a bunch of huge textures and gigantic shadow maps.
