You have been asked to create a SCOUT BIRD COMPANION for a RTS game unit.

note* This is not a game unit itslef, this is a companion character to the game unit.
Examples might be: The Night Elves Owl in Waraft3, or The Vampire Bats in Sacred etc...

Limitations are that it must be a bird (or flying creature). It must be able to Perch on the units shoulder or arm. and it must be able to fly (ie.. no penguins)

the Unit is used to reveal small areas of the fog of war, or to spy on oposing forces. You choose.

Your Job is to model this bird in either the Perched pose or the Flight Pose (or Both)

Your model must contain:
-No more than 500 tris
-256x256 color

You may also include
-256x256 alpha
-256x256 bump or normal map
-256x256 spec

please post Wires and Final Images

DEADLINE - Wed December 21 12:00am EST (Tuesday Midnight)

Winner chooses next weeks challenge

Sounds cool. Does the bird need to be rigged, since you say it needs to be able to perch and fly?

No, doesn't need to be. just pick either position.

but if you feel like rigging it, go ahead.

Here's my first WIP images

422 triangles so far. No textures yet. about 2 hours of work

originally, I wanted to make a phoenix, but I kind of like this half falcon / half tropical bird look. I think I'm gonna keep it.

maybee I'll model it in the flight position too, depends on how I feel later

wow, there is remarkably low participation here.

I thinkit's for 2 reasons,

1) becuase we're so close to the Holidays
and
2) because the thread is now sticky. <-- I'm serious. I practically never even glance at the sticky threads when I visit forum that I'm familiar with.

I think in the future, we should leave the thread in the normal section, but keep bumping it

Yorgo, I must say I was a little let down by the "no penguins" thing here, but I'm coping.
I decided to make a dragon instead, and I'm enjoying working on it so far
Here's what I got: about 1.5 hr modelling and 488 tris

Sorry guys. I've been struggling teaching myself about joints, constraints, hierarchies, etc. And I mean really struggling. I havn't done any modeling in about a week.

They look sweet though. Keep it up.

Yorgo, are you going to keep the same style for the texture, a falcon and a tropical bird?

Here's a sample of the flats and a recent render. I think I'm going to rig it and make a better presentation later. Let me know what you think in the mean time.

wow dude, nice.

I can't believe you rigged and animated it! You did a great job, especially considering the penguin limitation.

JuddWack: I'll post textures later today too, I'm thinking about incorporating a little phoenix influence. Reds and yellows etc...

it doesn't look like I'll finish the texture so I'll just post what I have.

texture's about 30% done but still, it's enough...

I also adjusted the proportions. made the head smaller etc...

this was fun to work on.

So it looks like Living_the_dream is this weeks winner!

it's a cool dragon

dude, when you start a new thread, do not ask an admin to make it sticky, just leave it in the forum and we'll keep bumping it.

Awesome! I'm flattered. I like the progress on yours too Yorgo, you should finish it and post it when you are done. I made a final presentation of mine which should be going in my portfolio whenever I start organizing one:

Why? - ....

@ BazookaTooth: because people tend to skip over the Sticky threads when they visit the forum.

this MGAC was made sticky right away, it only had 480 hits before it ended
the last MGAC was never sticky, and it had over 1600 hits before it ended

by leaving it NON-sticky, I think we have better chances for more participation

Runy, that's hilarious. I love your concept.

I think a lot of people didn't comepete this week because a larger monthly challenge just started. I was trying but max is crashing on me a lot and I havn't even started texturing so I may abort.

it needs to be made a stickey every time so people know where to find it.

It should really be posted under the Game Art Challenge area though

Yeah I completely overlooked this because I tend to skip past the stickies at the top, I would have defenatley competed in this one too. Ah well next time perhaps.

There has been 2 next times already. It takes some searching but you can find the current next time on the 3rd page of threads (3rd here at least).
