Have they improved it since v1? It seemed a bit complex to use for what it did.

It's changed a lot since version 1. In version 2 we added a new "Lab" system that made things much easier to do. You can actually read about those changes here: http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/gen2tour/index.htm
