View Full Version : mental ray custom shaders(for Maya)?
Georgy 11-24-2002, 11:38 AM Hello. Please, can anyone tell me how to work with
mental ray custom shaders? I don't understand the main concept.
Thank you very much.

the main concept is that you can write your own shaders (surface, geometry etc) and then bind them into your scene, instead of using maya shaders. mental ray or renderman shaders can do a lot of things you can't really do with simple maya shaders.
on the other hand writing these shaders isn't very easy for most of the people. if you have a programming background and have a good understanding for shaders you can try it.
unfortunatly the implementation of the costum shaders in the beta is buggy (what a surprise)

Thank you svenip.
But, maybe there is some library...?

no library i know off. but there are probably thousends of shaders written. unfortunatly nobody will give you their own custom written shaders, because such stuff is expensive for productions. but there is a good start in the help files from mental which will give you a good help.
What i dont understnad is there´re renderman shader, maya shader - why there´re no MR shaders for free - i hope we will get
a community for this
